holy fuck, i just finished season 1

does it keep getting better? this is honestly one of the best shows i've seen in a long time.
>>
All that stuff you liked about season 1? Gone. Even the stuff that seemed like it would be nationwide. Completely forgotten.
>>
>>71738554
season 2 is pretty different. some people like it more, some people like it less. it's still a must watch if you liked s1.
>>
>>71738554
Story-wise, less things happen in season 2.
>>
Just a reminder that in the book they never explain what actually happened and it's a Damon Lindelof series so nothing will ever be resolved.

if you want to know what happened you're literally missing the point

As someone who loved season 1 I thought season 2 was definitely better even as they dialed things back in scope. You're in for a treat. Catch up in time for the season 3 premiere so you can talk shit about it with us

>>
>>71738554

I haven't watched season one in a while but I got season two recently and I was planning on rewatching back to back but did they ever explain if the people taken had a similar pattern to them? I think the Downs guy is a clue to all of this, what if all the people who vanished had some genetic abnormality to them?
>>
I have never seen this series, explain to me what's good about it. I don't want to be fooled by false hype.

Season 2 is better, and I think you'll agree.

How great is Les Revenants/The Returned? I read somewhere that it's like a modern day French equivalent to Twin Peaks, and that caught my attention but I haven't seen anyone really talking about it, especially on here.

Also, I gotta throw my support behind The Leftovers in case anyone who hasn't seen it needs that 50th recommendation to push them over the edge. S2e8 International Assassin might be one of the greatest hours of television I've ever seen. Like elevates-tv-to-art good.

Why did yall like it? I thought it was bizarre and totally out of place with the vibe of the show. I mean I didn't completely hate it, but it seemed like such an odd change, especially from the spot on s1 intro. That and the way the singer sings "from" and "done" makes me want to kill someone.
>>

I think it was unplanned, she was definitely surprised/elated when he told her his folks had moved to Jordan in Texas
>>

Congrats on your trips man, you must be proud. Why am I first to check em?

Les Revenants is great but I don't see the similarities to Twin Peaks, don't watch it if that's what you're looking for. There's no air of lightness/quirkiness to it.
>>
>>71741440
Well the song itself is about how existential angst is a big problem and worrying about it fucks you up. Which is pretty much 100% the theme of the show.

I like that it's happy but restrained which gives a nice compliment to the show's mostly sad but sometimes happy vibe.

And I like that they didn't go for techno or classical BWAAAMMMM like most other shows.
>>
>>71738885
>Tease viewers with inexplicable grand mystery
Only the idiot viewers who don't understand the point of the show after two seasons.

>But half the cast searching for answers
Literally an irrelevant point. Not only is it untrue (most of the cast is simply trying to live their lives), but the fact that people are working so hard to unravel a mystery they will never get an answer to is part of the metaphor.

>Viewers should not focus on mystery lol
You can focus on whatever you want, you seem fairly stupid so maybe you can only appreciate the show on a shallow level. Just don't whine when the show doesn't answer questions they told you they wouldn't answer back in season 1.
>>
>>71741385

I adored that opening even though it's definitely partially responsible for putting people off the show. Rewatch it as often as Carnivale's
>>
>>71738764
>everything I don't like was posted by the same person

Season 1, while a bit (by lindelof standards) forced, was about a nationwide existential crisis and people working through it.

Season 2 was about people being angry their grief wasn't getting national recognition after 140 million people vanished.

There is no mystery. The author came up with an idea and was too lazy to ever come up with an resolution.
>>
>>71741825
lindelof focuses on the "romance" of mystery because he knows for damned certain he can't write a compelling resolution. He knows his mysteries will be more interesting than any actual answer he can produce, so he tries to pass that off as a stylistic choice, rather than a personal failing.

Its like those idiots on deviantart who try to pass their complete and total lack of artistic ability as personal style, because that's easier than improving.

Its even worse than that. the author specifically wanted a certain situation (dude worldwide existential crisis lmao! sheeple being forced to wake up! They go crazy!!) then just forced it into being without actually developing any sort of organic reasoning for such a state of affairs. The IP is basically just playing ring-a-round-the-rosie with the five stages of grief and various characters who are supposed to represent different aspects of those stages.

Its pop-sociological garbage.

Daily reminder that this show has no substance whatsoever and leaving aside the mysteries that never have to be answered yet comprise the bulk of the show is a poor excuse for a melodrama that is tailored towards stupid/ignorant and spiritually bankrupt people who automatically assume a show must be smart because it's on HBO and don't understand that symbolism doesn't equal depth.

Everyone on /tv/ goes gaga over this fucking show. Call me a sucker, but I've mostly trusted the tastes on this site (mostly). I gave the first episode a try and was bored as fuck. Cult-ish narrative devices are always hackneyed, as are apocalyptic-style narratives (I know this is not technically a post-apocalyptic narrative, but it functions very similarly). The editing gimmicks were stale, transparent, and way overused. I wanted to like it really fucking bad, but I didn't.

The opinion/fact dichotomy is STRICTLY enforced by people with bad taste/no taste for actual inquiry or self improvement. There is no disinction between opinion and fact - just statements with varying levels of work put into them.

If the statement references yourself, say whatever you want. But when it comes to something like "this show is great/this show is shit", you're not saying "I like this show/I hate this show". Theyre not the same thing. The latter statements are verifiable through evidence, and one of them ought to be right, considering they contradict eachother.

This is very very fundamental logic and very few people exercise it

I obviously don't care about semantic arguments. "I like this show/I hate this show" are not opinions; one of them is true, and the truth can be either for anyone.

"This show is great/this show is shit" are both statements subject to inquiry. They are not opinions. They are not uniquely true to each person. One of them is more right for everyone everywhere, but to find which one requires evidence.

Symbolism is being subtle about a certain thing, by it's subtlety it can even be more stimulating than a real argument, and depending on the symbol, it can have actual depth or even a different view related to the subject it's trying to symbolize. Film/TV is not a medium that can appeal to real depth, they have little time to do it, symbolism is one way that is as good as the real depth (this one requires argumentation and can be done better in books or so).

>>71743005
You're appealing to generalization to justify your argument. I think Zohan is a good movie (I do have arguments to prove it), but most of the people don't like this movie.

How can you say that opinions don't exist? A fact can be changed if we analyze it through a different lens, therefore is not a fact anymore, it becomes an opinions and people can agree or not with it.

until you realize hes a walking-talking retelling of the book of job. Is a christian priest. Has read the book of job. Calls the book of job his favorite book. Yet continues to willingly be job in a reality that exists only to fuck him over for trying to be a decent person.

I liked him until the season 2 redo of the Job episode from season 1, it was a but too overt

kevin literally respawns, twice, by playing a little video game, so that theory is most certainly still possible.

>A fact can be changed if we analyze it through a different lens, therefore is not a fact anymore, it becomes an opinions and people can agree or not with it.
The fact doesn't change - the fact never changed. There are no "different lenses"; there is one lens, tuned by logic. When you say a fact "changes", it only becomes closer to truth, and was never a fact to begin with but only mistaken as one.

Logic is logic, reason is reason. It dictates what it dictates. You can choose to not believe in it - doesn't make it right, permissible, or appropriate.

The same thing everyone wishes for. To go back to the way it was before the departening.

I don't know man, International Assassin really seems to support the idea that he was in an afterlife. Plus you have Patty actually being able to influence what's going on.

I liked when The Sopranos did it first

I really hope they don't come back next season.

The dad is an asshole that goes out of his way to beat people.

The mom kills birds and is literally never polite even once

Daughter is a plot device

Son is a well balanced and polite individual

The "afterlife" in leftovers is a belabored reference to the greek afterlife, which characters in the greek classics basically hop in and out of like it has a revolving door. Thus the reason its a hotel. "Don't drink the water" was referencing the river Lethe.

Nothing about it really indicates its not just a simulation.

>Let the mystery be
when will resolutionfagging plebs like you realize that there is just as much mystery and unresolvedness in your own existence as their is in this show and others like it?

literally just go watch a bunch of reruns of Law & Order if you have such a hard on for resolution

matter of fact just sit down and do a bunch of addition problems over and over again on a piece of paper until you cum from all those delicious answers
>>
>>71744587
vergil seemes pretty cool, except for the whole child molesting thing, and he's dead anyway
>>
>>71744507
After "dying," he wakes up naked in a tub. He walks to an armoire. In the armoire are three completely different outfits. Cop, priest, and (turns out) international assassin. As international assassin he has to play that role and all the difficulties entailed in order to slay his demon and get another life.

Then the second time, he choose cop. To which he has to play that role and slay his personal demons to get another chance at life.

Its a literal video game sequence.

My own existence wasn't written by a man named damon lindelof.

Rationalizing a piece of fiction's failings by comparing that fiction to reality, something larger and more complex than any human mind can grasp, is a load of pure pseudo-intellectual psychobabble and betrays the idea you're only praising this show because you think so highly of your own intellect that anything you don't/can't understand must be genius.
>>
>>71744587
The entire family was nothing but a collection of plot devices half-assedly converted into characters

So some philosofies are wrong and there are others that are right? Nope, they coexist.
Abiogenesys was a fact, until biogenesys came, and abiogenesys was a mistake.
Dreams have a lot of comprehensions, until Freud came and his psychoanalysis was treated as a fact, then Jung came and both can be interpreted the way they want. Logic conclusions can lead to sofisms, many scientists fail and many theories coexist, because there are no answers, in fact most of the things that exist have no answer, we know how they work at a certain level.
>>
>>71744416

>he thinks a television show comprehends to a immutable fact

Almost fell from the chair, it is amazing the stupidity people say just to be contrarian.
>>
>>71744587
I think the point of them was because despite they spared from the tragedy of the departed that doesn't mean the family can act like everything okay like some sort of contrast to Kevin family who problems became them the main focus because the departed.

Honestly the problem with the black family beside Michael was that they were so crazy and came ascross as plot-devices instead of actual characters is hard to give a shit about them probelms. Also the daughter was the definition of a selfish edgy teenager, bitch cause chaos on her town because she couldn't talk to her mom or dad.
