Yes, trailer and other marking hype sells toys prior to release, so it's standard practice to put out the toys early. The goal is to make as much money as possible before the movie is released in case the film bombs. Of course that doesn't help a movie like this because there is no positive hype for it, and virtually no market for the merchandise even if people didn't hate it.
If the product isn't moving now it's only going to get worse when the movie is released based on the awful trailers and leak. That's why they're clearancing the stuff now, because the writing is on the wall and they're desperate to sell this shit off before it's too late.

They could have brought back the surviving cast for ghost busters 3 and casted a female character to replace the guy that died. Have it be a story about the old guys coming out of retirement to fight one last time and pass the torch on to a new generation. Have the movie end with the female leading a new 2 male 2 female team of ghost busters.
Bonus points if the movie deals with the female being on the team the same way they did with Winston where nobody gives a fuck and they don't do any retarded "GRRRRRRRRL POWER"
