Jeff Nichols for the most part creates characters with arcs and depth. He is particularly great at capturing various roles of masculinity, whether it be a husband, a father, a brother, a son or a friend.
He is one of the best script writers out there today. Dialogue and story structure tend to feel earned and natural, as strongly evidenced in Take Shelter.
His authentic and unique takes on southern states is also something to be cherished.
String parallels between him and Mark Twain.
Name a legitimately non lazy character arc with depth in either Blue Ruin or Green Room.

Tell me how Jeff Nichols isn't a massively superior director.
His stories are grander in scope, his characters are actually developed, the dialogues are tight, he accurately depicts areas of the South, his takes on masculinity are second to none, the actual subject matter is secondary to the growth and journey of his characters (the goal of any top notch film or literature).
Blue Ruin is far from a bad movie but it hardly has any sort of character arcs or themes other than a man solely set on vengeance at any cost.
Green Room is simply competently made, in a world chalk full of shit thrillers.
