Based on the design it appears they are trying to go back harder to the original which was more about a monster born from an atomic explosion, less about it being reptilian.
The scaring red symbolizing the scarred bodies from Hiroshima, just like the original Godzilla.
It is probably a knee-jerk reaction, but also because they believe they should take it back to what it was originally intended to be - Godzilla the monster of all monsters, the destroyer of the Earth.

Originally I hated it when I saw the full reveal months ago. But since then the image of the new Godzilla has stuck with me and made me think about why I disliked it. Mulling it over really made me appreciate its design. I hated the arms and long neck. Now I look at it like a Monster born from the absolute worst of Humanity. A being in unending suffering and anguish, his shriveled fetus like arms reaching out as if to ask "why?"
Honestly, this is a great design. A true monster and not something we can readily identify like before in the form of a dinosaur or lizard. This is an actual nightmare creature birthed from sin and punishment here to execute judgement on humanity.
I really like the tone they are going for with the movie too.

I think they went a bit overboard with the whole "Godzilla's hide resembles the skin of radiation burn victims" in this design. It should be more haunting instead of just a weird scrunched-up bleeding scrotum.
