Why is this so critically reviled? I thought it was good.
It's pretty good but the whole movie is soured by the fact Danny Boyle and Ewen MacGregor fell out over this movie since Ewen was supposed to be cast as the lead but Leo somehow wormed his way in instead.
It would have been better with Ewen as well, which makes it even worse.

It's not that great.
The book was really something to read, and the movie took only the core theme of a semi-dangerous secret-beach and left out a lot of what made it feel real.
And they left out the end of the book where all the inhabitants slow-stab the shit out of him in a drug-induced stupor.

I used to love it, but just watched it again the other night for the first time in years and it really doesn't hold up.
The scenery/locations are all eye candy, and there's some decent acting - Leo not included - but I feel like the director just didn't really understand the story and got the tone completely wrong.
