The setting is post apocalyptic. Discreetly in the book series because they were marketed as medieval fantasy on the heels of the hippie era Tolkien trend. TV show plays it up because it's trying to appeal to the Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner Young Adult dystopia fiction crowd. Basic marketing.

Not quite, elves had always been around along with magic and magical creatures. There was a big war between the elves and everybody else that resulted in the Elves winning and everybody else and most of the magic getting locked in a parallel shadow world. The elves go into seclusion and Mankind rises. The literal Apocalypse happens influenced by creatures/demons from the other side and mankind falls, a lot of creatures break free and magic starts coming back. Dwarves are humans that kept underground when the shit hit the fan, Trolls are magically mutated people and Gnomes may be humans that survived and got mutated or creatures that escaped from the other side I'm not sure. The books deal with very larges lengths of time with some series being set generations after the previous ones.
Of course all of this doesn't mater because the TV series is only interested in teen drama bullshit. Thanks MTV.
