Hey, anyone want to talk about Jurassic Park movies? I've marathoned the entire series today, and would love to know how /tv/ feels about these movies.

To start things off, what did you think of Jurassic World? How does it compare to the original and the other sequels?
>>
Jurassic Park > Jurassic World > The Lost World > Jurassic Park III for me.

I actually loved Jurassic World, it was pure 80's blockbuster fun. But I know most of /tv/ hates it.
>>
jurassic park, especially the trex roar, was the first movie to actually wake me out of my childhood murkiness of thoughts and into consciousness. I shit you not. always have a special place in my heart for the original. never cared for the others after.

My comparison would be very similar, but I thought that Jurassic Park III was a lot better than The Lost World, which I found hilariously bad. What was Steven even thinking?
>>
I love Jurassic Park, the original is a genuinely great movie.

Two has a lot of stupid scenes, but some really fun scenes

I don't like 3 that much. At least Sam Neil was in it.

Jurassic World was better than 3,It's a close call between JW and JP2, there are a lot of really dumb things in JP2, moreso than in JW, but the scenes that work in 2 are better than anything in Jurassic World so I'd have to rate them like:

JP > JP2 > JW > JP3
>>
Watching Jurassic Park right now. Fantastic movie. Way more of a horror movie than I remembered it being as a kid. It's a shame Laura Dern wasn't in the sequels. I think I'm in love with her.

JP1: good pacing neat effects average characters, suffers from rushed final act

7.9/10

JP2: solid sequel cool gadgets interesting new dinos. great tension building moments. Goes full retard with king kong style trex rampage

6.6/10

JP3: boring stagnant derivitive not even sam neil nor pterodactyl cage can save it 5.8/10

JW: crisp set designs cool characters, kids are annoying and had retarded soldier dinoes sub plot. Anticlamactic and relys too much on nostalgia. Pterrodactyl air raid was pretty neat

7.5/10

Yeah she just seems very innocent and nice. They don't sexualize her at all in it either so it adds to that appeal. Wild at Heart is one of my favorite movies. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

What are your thought on Kelly Curtis, Ian's teenage daughter from a failed relationship?

She's such a useless character, and her being black does not help it, either. It's like they needed an obnoxious kid in the movie. As if saving his girlfriend was not a reason enough for Ian to go to the Site B.

I know there was a daughter character in the book, as well as a black boy, but combining these characters into one and still not doing anything interesting with her is just a really weird decision.
>>

>Goes full retard with king kong style trex rampage

I know it's really stupid but I love that part.
>>
>>71598810
Yeah, she was shoehorned in. Part of the franchise though has always been 'family.' Only thing more shoehorned than this relationship was BDH and her nephews in JW.
>>
>>71598622
I've seen most other Lynch/Dern films but I need to see that one. She's perfect in Blue velvet too, but in a different way to in JP. And that voice of hers. It makes me diamonds.
>>
>>71598810
It was a cool idea, but very poorly executed.

Typical of shitty children, she makes a dumb decision (stowaway), which takes a major turn for the worse then cries and complains until dad makes everything ok. God I hate kids in movies. Why does this series insist on having kids in every movie?

I see a lot of you don't think much of Jurassic Park III. I thought it was a better movie than The Lost World.

For one, it has Sam Neil back, I really liked that. Wish Laura Dern returned in a larger role, tho. The rest of the cast was not particularly interesting, but they were at least flashed out enough, unlike the cast of The Lost World. Could anyone honestly describe Vince Vaughn's character in that movie? I sure couldn't.
It also had an actual dinosaur fight, something that was sorely missing from the previous films. It was short, but it was sweet. Jurassic World topped that off, tho.
I just liked the pacing more in general. Fewer useless scenes.

I was sort of hoping there would be more things to list, but I can't come up with any right now. Really, TLW and JP3 are both terrible movies in my opinion, but TLW did a lot more stupid shit. It's really about being the worse movie between these two, not the better one.

The ending confused me, tho - why is nobody actually bothering to shoot the damn pterodactyls down? Everyone seems just fine about them flying to nest in the mainland.

And that raises the question - why even clone pterodactyls? Land dinosaurs are at least somewhat easy to contain, but flying ones? Really? Jurassic World had them as well, and it was just pure chaos when they got out. At least the new movie came up with those shock implants, but how they didn't work in the end? I don't think this was explained.

Yes the cloning of pterodactyls seems like a containment nightmare. Ocean-based dinosaurs seems like disaster waiting to happen.
>>
>>71598916
>Part of the franchise though has always been 'family.'
Ian Malcolm is revealed to have children from several failed marriages in the first movie, not retconned in the second.
Third movie shows Alan Grant is still single, no longer in a relationship with Ellie Sattler. Two other main characters are a divorced couple, looking for their son who got lost during his weekend with his new dad.
Jurassic World featured two kids whose parents are getting divorced. Literally added nothing to the movie apart from that one scene where the little kid cries, but whatever, it's just there.
I don't know man, for a series concerned with promoting family values, they sure feature a lot of failed ones.

My sentiments as well. I don't remember some of the death scenes being so fucked up when I was three years old.

I made it about half way through JP3 and had to stop. It was terrible all throughout, but I really liked the Spino design and wanted to see more, but that scene when Alan is saved by that kid in the mask, it was too much.

I don't remember TLW at all, I might re-watch it later

He cracked one good joke in the entire movie, then got mad at Roland Tembo for some reason (although it was implied they are rivals of some sort, I think), and then he just disappears from the third act altogether.

That being said, I have no complains about Trembo, guy could have been the protagonist for all I care.

>>
Also, please explain something to me.

When the movie came out, all of /tv/ were making fun of this scene where Owen Grady challenges the raptors to a dance off.

But when I watched the movie today, I was surprised to see there was no scene like that. Instead, he just ran away.

Were you guys trolling the entire time, or did I watch an alternate version of some sort? Because I was honestly expecting the entire movie to be filled to the brim with humor of that quality, and was proved wrong.

>>71599719
That picture is not retarded, because I merely wanted to show how the actor looked then, and how he looks now. The quotes in capture were not intentional.

>>71599815
Honestly? I didn't quite get that vibe from him.
And I might be wrong, but wasn't there a scene in the first movie where he refuses a drink from Hammond?
>>
>>71598483
why do new movies have a blue yellow tint to it? the old one has a nice warm hue
>>
>>71599862
>refuses a drink from Hammond?
Because Hammond broke into their trailer and opened their champagne, he was pissed off so he didn't accept the drink.

That was also before the horrors of the first movie happened. By the 3rd movie Grant is having nightmares about Raptors.

Jurassic Park is one of my favorite movies, I did a little project: The soundtrack has music not in the film, so I put all the music that was taken out back in.

Obviously it was pulled for a reason, but now you can hear the movie as it was originally scored with 100% John Williams tracks restored. Some scenes work, some are better without. Let me know which scenes sound better with the music, or without

I think the original movie is close to a perfect film: astounding technology which stands up to this day, a solid science fiction idea combined with political and ethical criticism, amazing pacing which builds up a sense of wonderment* and fear, but it's not too far up its own ass and delivers on action, drama and is presented in a way even a kid would understand while at the same time not insulting the intelligence of the adults.

* if you don't believe me, go check how long it takes for them to actually show a dinosaur, and how unimpressive the images are; but the pace and the score make that not matter at all.

Then the Lost World blew that up; don't how a movie could fuck up that badly.

I haven't bothered to watch III recently. I thought JW was good but was hindered by its nostalgia.

Pretty sure there is a line in JW that addresses this, one of the characters says something along the lines of if the dinosaurs were pure clones they would look a lot different. I took that to be in reference to dinosaurs having feathers.

All the dinosaurs were hybrids to an extent they just tried to stay as close to the source as possible, using frog DNA and shit, makes you wonder was the spinosaurus the source dinosaur or not maybe it was the first hybrid, hybrid like indominus because the spino survived a direct bite to it's neck from the trex, should of been over there, indominus laughed at rexies bites to her neck though so makes you think or maybe im just high and talking shit
>>

Oh ok, my bad, i dunno overall where can they even go with these movies anymore another island where dinosaurs break out again, hell i'd watch it but i feel like they are out of options now for a fresh plot.
>>

Couple things I liked about JP3.

1. Best kid character in the whole series, I mean, there's a kid's book detailing the days he spent surviving on the island and having to evade and elude carnivores.

2. Introduction to the Spinosaurus.

3. Cool locations, I liked seeing the Pteradactyl Dome, it was pretty creepy.

Trying to tame what they have made and failing to do so sounds like it has good odds. By which I mean take the geneticist, now unrestrained by his job requirements, and seeing the real ramifications of someone making monsters for the highest bidders. And the kinds of idiots that would order, say, velociraptors as guard dogs.

Hoskins joined the InGen Security Division sometime before 2001 as a security contractor. When the three Pteranodons that had escaped the Isla Sorna Aviary at the end of the Isla Sorna Incident of 2001 reached Canada, Hoskins oversaw the "clean up" of the adult Pteranodon.[2]

Simon Masrani, CEO of Masrani Global Corporation who had acquired InGen, who in turn was in possession of InGen Security, was impressed by the professionalism that Hoskins and his team displayed and hired him to regrow the InGen Security Divison. Under his command, the security firm became one of the most well-known of its kind, it even gained a partnership with the United Nations Security Council.

Apparently it's supposed to look like this, a comment from the uploader (on Myspleen)

>A lot of people are surprised this release looks so desaturated. This is not a mistake, this is how the print looks projected. The encoding process preserved colors and detail from source scan pretty good too. Here's a comparison. Top 4K frame, middle lossless 1080p downscale, bottom x264 encode.

I saw the original as a kid, like really little and saw it continually throughout my childhood. The various scenes, in particular the box containing the raptor at the beginning, the cars and their contents (especially the boxes with the binoculars) send such strong feelings of synthesia through me that it's pretty much a 11/10 to me. The rest mean absolutely nothing to me

Better question, why do I love this miniseries so much? Was 1998-2005 the golden age of miniseries?

It was my first movie (think I was 4 or 5), and my parents wanted me to see it since I loved dinosaurs. I think they skipped the gore parts, but showed me most of the scenes with the dinosaurs. It was great and still one of my favorites to this day.

Jurassic World was a really fun movie. I'd rank it better than the sequels, but not as good as the first. It wasn't amazing, but it kept me entertained and wasn't afraid to go into ridiculous moments just to entertain.
>>
Honestly not sure why they made JW instead of just a straight remake of JP. They should have just made the new one a direct adaptation of the book. While the first movie is still amazing in its own way, there were a ton of cool scenes from the book they cut out, (the waterfall, aviary, muldoon's rocket launcher, the Raptor nest, raptors chewing through bars in the hotel, etc)
>>
>>71598172

One thing that bugged me recently ((just knit picking) is that the carnivorous dinosaurs would get lysine from their meat diets (source of complete protein) so the lysine contingency is useless..
>>
>>71611256
A remake would:
a) generate backlash
b) be compared to the original (and that's a high goal post)
c) make references and nostalgia impossible.
So ironically an original story can actually be less original and be less work.

It's true that they missed the opportunity to take more from the book though. Well, there's always more films.
>>
>>71611834
Agreed, if they remake it follow the source, the book was WAY more dark and would be an interesting story and something to build on, don't try and recapture glory the original, never.going.to.happen

Yeah I rewatched JP recently and I would rate it highly as a modern classic. Everything fits together so well, all the story bits have some sort of payoff that seems natural enough. Then there are the great effects and music, plus nice visuals and acting.
Although in my rewatch I noticed a lot of fanservice from the Malcolm character, which I didn't mind but thought was odd.

I just re-watched Jurassic Park the other day (last time I saw it may have been in the theatre) and had forgotten what an excellent, excellent movie it was.

The limited use of the dinosaurs, the build up to the use of the dinosaurs, the acting, everything about this movie was good. Just had a little bit and just enough of everything to make it work.
>>
>>71614917
I liked Jurassic World to the point where I still have the ticket stub from when I saw it on opening night in my wallet, but I can concede that it had major problems, it's not just the usual contrarian /tv/ memeing.

The Indominus breakout scene, the scene that is the crux of the entire movie's plot, is tremendously flawed. Indominus is camouflaged and invisible on the heat tracker, so far so good, there's claw marks on the walls to suggest it escaped, but wait a second, wasn't there a huge construction crew out there? Wouldn't that make a ton of noise and carnage? If the paddock was complete at this point and there was no one else around beforehand, that would be fine, but now it doesn't make sense. Then instead of calling the control room from the paddock, Claire runs to her car and drives halfway over there before calling them. If they had just put in a bit where her cell phone didn't get reception or she explained that there weren't any cell towers built on that part of the island yet, the scene would be fine. I don't have much of a problem with Owen going in to investigate the paddock considering everyone is under the impression that it's escaped and there's no conceivable way it should be in there. But man, this one scene fucks the movie up hard, at least the action in it is nice.
>>
>>71616309
Hey man, your point is great.

But it's nothing compared to pic related.
>>
>>71616485
Oh absolutely.
>fucks around with baby dinosaurs just so the filmmakers can include a pointless action scene
That scene did nothing but establish that this lady should already be dead by this point and she should be thankful that Ian's there to save her retarded ass. At least we got "saRA." out of that.

It's true that they very much played it safe with JW, but the fact that "playing it safe" ended up in a decent film is kind of uplifting, in my opinion. I feel the same about the Marvel films, sure they're kind of lazy and mostly visionless, but they never get downright insulting about it. There's not much pretense of it being something other than a blockbuster hypetrain; it's a pitty they don't try a bit more, 's all.

jp 1 - was great. my english teacher (mrs. balis) introduced me to the book (though thinking back now i think she wanted the D). i read it in one day and that summer the movie was coming out. it was also when i realized movies don't follow the book. still it was a great movie.

jp 2 - it was alright. for me it was too much of the 'evil business trying to take control'. hated the daughter. i thought by then that any adult would've been like 'the fuck is a kid doing here?'

jp 3 - better than jp 2, but the idea of a kid being alive for more than a week is stretching it. a week or 2 weeks would've been fine (not what the film said it was). but again. a kid? it shoulda been a hs graduate on vacation with ex wife new sancho.

jw - it was okay. the fat operator not doing his job, the 'lousy' cell reception and losing the indominous rex was lame. the owner saying 'this park was made on the idea of maintaining control' instead of saying (when the indominous several people when it first escaped) close the park, get everyone on the boats! call the reserve military! shut down EVERYTHING!!! was beyond stupid. oh and of course 2 brats lost in the park.

it's gotten to the point that any movie that is coming out, if it has kids; i do not want to see it, because they are the reason things go to shit and or do stupid things.

I agree.

The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 suffered from sequel syndrome. They felt disconnected and directionless. Also my major gripe is how they turned the dinosaurs into monsters not animals. everything Rexy does in Jurassic Park makes sense from animal behavior. Territorial displays to eating when she's hungry. The scene of her chasing down the gallimus felt like a documentary or national geographic moment. We saw an animal doing it's thing. The Raptors are explained as being intelligent but homicidal killers because they were not raised correctly. This is explained in the books and alluded too in jurassic park world.

In the Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 everything feels straight up malicious and evil. None of the characters made sense of even the actions they had meant anything. I agree with Ebert, TLW should've been a documentary on the island that goes wrong instead of an excuse to kill nameless extras. JP3 makes no fucking sense and destroys alan's arc from the first movie.

Jurassic World is sad because it only exists because, instead of learning from InGen, humanity went full force in the opposite direction. The movie shows us that humans ultimately can't outgrow their hubris and refuse to learn or change. It's a tradgedy in that sense.

Other than that the movie is terrible.

jurassic park should have been the only movie, no fucking sequels
>>
I love the first one, the others were alright though JW had a great score.
Also my French teacher in high school did most of the textures in the anomtronic dinosaurs.

Interesting, the 3D blu-ray is similar to that, only warmer and DNR'd to hell because Universal is a meme studio.

Jurassic World sucked me in with the cute boyfu. It wasn't as good as the first movie but it was pretty enjoyable and Ty was nice to look at.

So....what the fuck happened on this boat? Even as a kid I could smell the bullshit that was this scene.
>all the crew members are dead, clearly eaten by the showing off the dismembered arm
>but most of the crew were in tight spaces so it couldn't have been daddy rex
>we also see that when daddy rex breaks out of the cage it has to be unlocked and he always breaks the door upon getting out, the door is not broken when they 1st investigate the boat
>and the ending with hammond is suppose to be like baby rexs 1st kill + theres no way that little fuck could take on a whole crew
Also how long were they dead for? Couldn't have been that long since theres no way the boat would stay that on course with nobody alive. And why not radio for help?
>>
>>71620978
They were clearly killed by velociraptors or compys. Then they couldn't figure out a way to include them when the T-Rex was rampaging through the city, so they just aborted the whole idea of multiple dinos let loose on the city so they wouldn't have to bother filming anything except the T-Rex. But they were still stuck with the chomped up crew to explain the crashing ship.
>>
>>71621073
Just don't have the ship crash then, the rex can still get loose.

That does mean you miss out on the suspense and miniature work of the ship crash scene though.
>>
>>71621704
They might have already had the stuff filmed. Or they'd gone too far with the ship crash already and didn't want to throw it away and have to rewrite as well. It's much easier to just half-ass it.
>>
>>71620978
I have a better question: what the fuck happened to the guys on the boat in the beginning of jp3?
>>
>>71621978
Nessie got 'em.
>>
JW was GREAT
>>
Considering how much they showed off Chris Pratt for the trailers and previews for Jurassic World, I really hope that he actually is the protag for the sequel

I'm not the only one that thought the scientist bitch was retarded, right?
>>
>>71622043
Well, he's the top expert on raptors, so who you gonna call?

Was anyone else disappointed with the Lego game? It felt...empty, compared to previous lego games.

Flip Lost world and III and you've got my rating.
>>
Jurassic World is the worst of them all. It's a soulless, meandering mess that you can tell went through about fifty rewrites and lacks any sort of cohesion.
>>
Reminder that Indominus was basically "Asspulls: The Dinosaur"

That's not even the worst of it. I had to explain to people WHY Rex didn't attack Blue(and vice-versa) and just went back to her cage.

Anyone else hoping Blue is shown to have survived on her own in the sequel?

Whoops, I thought the post said something entirely different.
>>
>>71622594
But why not? It's a T-Rex, it doesn't give a fuck it's an animal.
>>
>>71622648
Probably because it's old and tired and just got done fighting something way tougher than it was, and it's fought raptors before and wound up with big ugly scars and doesn't want to go through that shit again. Predatory animals rarely attack other predators unless it's for territorial reasons, like with the Indominus fight. Usually they'll try to avoid confrontation by bluffing the opponent out with roars and gestures, this isn't speculative behavior from dinosaurs, it's something we see in several modern day predators. The Rex would want low-risk food and it knows a lone raptor wouldn't try to attack it unprovoked, so with no large predators in the area to compete with and no low-risk food supply nearby, it fucks off to look elsewhere.
>>
>>71622711
Don't forget how it's probably been in it's cage(?) for maybe 10-20 years, with a constant supply of food.
>>
>>71622711
>>71622761
And that it only really attacked the Indominus because it got lured out by the red flare, signalling that it's food time.

If I thought I was going out for a nice dinner and then found myself having been tricked into fighting a mean motherfucker instead I'd have slunk back home as well after the fight was over.

Jurassic World was great. It pretty much had all the same flaws as other blockbuster movies like capeshit, except it never sat on things if you know what I mean so it was much more digestible. Didn't take itself too seriously either. Probably second best movie for me.
