Watch the good episodes with friends and family, watch the bad episodes alone so that nobody has to suffer except for you.

Don't skip anything or else you won't be able to understand any of our /trek/ thread memes.

you can watch all of TNG, it is very comfy

let me guess, you get "triggered" by the progressive values?

here's my personal TNG S1 "These episodes are of critical importance – you might as well skip the rest"-guide:

Eps. 1/2 "Encounter at Farpoint" (obvious...)
Ep. 5 "The Last Outpost" (cringeworthily introduces the Ferengi. A dreadful failure, yet worth a watch for curiosity's sake)
Ep. 6 "Where No One Has Gone Before" (A neat episode, centered on some "actual" Sci-Fi)
Ep. 9 "The Battle" (Well, the Ferengi again. But you'll get to know the "Picard Maneuver")
Ep. 13 "Datalore" (For continuity's sake)
Ep. 15 "11001001" (For continuity's sake. Also nice matte paintings.)
Ep. 18 "Home Soil" (A really good "Strange New Species"-Sci-Fi-centered episode not unlike TOS's "The Devil in the Dark")
Ep. 19 "Coming of Age" (unfortunately Wesley-centered. But you get a good look at how Starfleet Academy works – it's quite different from the JJ-verse academy and way more plausible)
Ep. 20 "Heart of Glory" (first real introduction to TNG-Klingons)
Ep. 23 "Skin of Evil" (For continuity's sake)
Ep. 24 "We'll Always Have Paris" (Sheds a bit of light on the type of guy that Picard is. Some neat special effects. Also Michelle Phillips. She was still quite the looker back then.)
Ep. 25 "Conspiracy" (Star Trek's first take on "Sci-Fi horror". Features the only REALLY gory scene in the whole franchise)
Ep. 26 "The Neutral Zone" (For continuity's sake. Also an interesting "fish-out-of-water"-episode featuring cryogenically frozen humans)

okay, just noticed that it corresponds with the guide in >>71597434 rather neatly.
There are more "Great" episodes in Seasons 3-5 than the guide would suggest though.

Not OP but I saved this and am considering applying it, sounds well thought out so thanks. Anyone have anything to add?

I recently started s1 rewatch and it is a little rough at points

S2 is objectively hit and miss, S1 however is very heavy on the "miss" side.
I really wouldn't know which other S1 episodes I could suggest- "The Big Goodbye" maybe, since it contains a lot of Trek-lore concerning the holodeck. The episode in it itself however could be summed up as "Picard and Friends act in a stereotypical Film Noir story"... and thus I'd rather suggest watching some actual Film Noir (Like "The Big Sleep", on which the episode's title is partially based – the other story being "The Long Goodbye", which however was never made into a movie).

EVERY episode is interesting to watch if you're really interested in BtS technical stuff. For example how they modified the sets throughout the season, which sets they never used again and so on.
There's a comprehensive guide to that on this absolutely fabulous fansite though:
http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/observations.htm

But I'm very happy that my guide could be of help.

VLC at 1.5x speed.
>>
>>71600403
Oh, setting-wise it's actually more akin to "The Maltese Falcon". But if you're a noir fan like me, I guess you might get a lot of fun out of that episode due to the fair number of noir-references it contains.

>(if you know whether that Enterprise is the 6-foot, 4-foot or 2-foot model, then you watch too much Star Trek)

Meh. the Enterprise in that pic is obviously the 6-foot model.
Fuckin everyone knows that!

The 4ft model had bumps and trinkets all over the place, as well as a thick saucer rim. It also didn't exist until S3.
The 2ft miniature's bottom part wasn't lit at all and the position lights on the saucer looked disproportionally large.

now look at the brilliant new CGI-model they used in some TNG-R episodes, starting from S5 (in shots where the original footage could not be recovered).
It's an absolute beauty, incorporating the best aspects of both, the 4-footer and the 6-footer to create the "definite" 1701-D

>>71600253
>the other story being "The Long Goodbye", which however was never made into a movie
Not true.

It is hard to recommend where to start with Trek. TNG is probably the best series for most people to start with, but season 1 is in large parts atrocious and 2 is better but not there yet. My best bet would be to go with some key episodes in season 1 (pilot, heart of glory, the neutral zone), skip some of the really shitty season 2 ones (The outrageous okona, The dauphin, Up the long ladder) then go on to season 3. If you like it you should go back and watch the rest at some point though.

>>
>>71600954
For TNG I feel like one of the best ways to introduce the show to people is to have them watch a few random mid season episodes. If that sticks, then point them to the beginning. That's pretty much how it was for people who watched a few episodes on TV, and later watched the series as a whole.
>>
>>71601106
Darmok was always my go-to episode for this. And then The Visitor for DS9. Once I can trick someone into watching those, they willingly agree to go back and watch the series from the beginning.
>>
>>71600954
oh yeah, right. The '73 movie.
My bad! I was thinking of "classic noir" there.
>>
>>71597339
Start with Encounter At Farpoint, the series pilot.
Give up in disgust when the captain of the Federation's Flagship surrenders his vessel in the first five minutes of the pilot.
Never return again.

Conspiracy is also important for an understanding of what the Trill are, and why they retreated for a do-over before taking on the Feds a second time.
>>
>>71600954
Hmm, "The Outrageous Okona" might have been the first true "So bad it's good"-episode in TNG.

If you ever want to explain the term "Mary Sue" to anyone, show them this episode.
I mean, it's so so fan-fictionesque, it's just ridiculous.

but hey, it has fine young Teri Hatcher in it!
>>
>>71597339
Should I watch all the movies after the series, or did some movies come out during the shows run?
>>
>>71601236
Aggressive, adversarial.

One of those posts literally says "Don't skip anything" but you were too blinded with rage to see it.

You're pathetic and useless.
>>
>>71601339
After. The movies kinda suck though. Made action movies of a non-action series, ruined the borg and ended the whole series on a huge downer.
>>
>>71601443
Ruined the Borg? Nah, the Borg were okay. It was Picard whon they ruined by turning him into Jean-Luc McClane.
>>
>>71601443
I blame Voyager for ruining the Borg.

The Queen was a mistake, but I can forgive mistakes when people learn from them and don't repeat them. By repeating First Contact's mistake, Voyager showed us that Berman and Braga are incapable of learning from their mistakes.
