They can't self terminate, that's established in Terminator 2. I'd presume that it would just wait someplace for Skynet to activate in 1997 then provide it advanced tech from its future design and databases.

I think there is one important thing about Terminator 2 that is the original JD was stopped and would not happen unless they send another terminator to do something.
