If Melissandre didn't have that shadowbaby, Renly would have invaded King's Landing and then sandwiched Tywin between him and Rob. Robb letting Theon go, and him subsequently taking Winterfell was a stroke of dumb luck for Tywin, who was losing at this point. This causes Robb to be 'comforted' and lose his Frey men. Tywin also has nothing to do with Cat being dumb and letting Jaime go, causing Karstark to go kill the Lannister prisoners and make Robb lose his Karstark men.
Tywins biggest strength is also his biggest weakness. All of his 'friends' despise him because of his ruthlessness and are constantly plotting against him. Littlefinger, Varys, the Tyrells (especially the queen of thorns), The Martells, and others are constantly plotting against Tywin, and were all outplaying him. At the first sign of weakness all of house Lannister's 'friends' turn against them, because of the resentment Tywin created. His greatest ambition of securing the future of his house was set up for inevitable failure, even if he had lived.
Finally his dickishness is perhaps the greatest towards Tyrion, who could have been Tywin's biggest asset if treated differently. Instead his insecurity about the appearance of his house and his resentment at Tyrion for 'causing' the death of Tywin's wife becomes his ultimate downfall, and he dies while taking a shit, which all things considered,was a rather fitting end.

Tytos was incredibly shit, yes, but Tywin was more just a brute who ruled through fear. He didn't so much win against Rob as Rob was a retard who pissed off his own allies and they killed him for him, hardly because of some master plotting. Tywin wasn't particularly talented however he was calculating and ruthless. He lost battles to Robb who was talented but ultimately defeated by Tywins calculated moves off the battlefield which house Lannister shared no blame in because it appears Frey acted alone.
He didn't fear Robert because Robert was indebted to him as well as being married to his daughter. Dorne doesn't care, the Reach bide their time to see who comes out on top while the Vale watches from afar. Everything he did was to send a message to Catelynn and the realm that capturing a Lannister was a real bad move.
Him being bad with his kids seem rather irrelevant but Jaime was taken from him by the mad king leaving only Tyrion to inherit which vexed him greatly.
He won the war and rules by proxy.
