He basically acting with no one and he's a traditionally trained stage actor who thrives off interactions with others. The Hobbit wasn't able to use a lot of the forced perspective tricks that allowed actors to be in the same space with one another due it being in 3D, so everything had to be scaled with green screen.

If you watch the special features though, the entire cast and crew do a really nice Ian day for him after they realized he's stressed as fuck making an already difficult film.
