Gore isn't scary. Especially not in The Thing which had hilariously fake puppets. It was most obvious in the stomach scene.

It isn't the gore that scares me. It's the devouring and assimilation. I didn't think the puppets were bad. Dated, sure but not bad.

The devouring is the gore. That's literally what gore is. And the puppets were dated at the time of release. They were just instantly corny, it didn't take any time for them to become dated.
The assimilation and the hidden monster is the thrilling part, hence thriller. Like Jaws. The shark is there, but it's not really scary.
