I don't believe he was a true sociopath because his book and various interviews with him seem to indicate that he loves his wife and kids, and that he generally likes people. His attitude toward the Iraq War was fucked up though. It was basically "They're evil, so it is my personal duty to kill them all no matter the cost."
He also had a very poor reputation in the SEAL Teams. He was described as a good SEAL, but a very shitty person.

But modern warfare is much more consistent in how much danger one is in. Right up until the mid 18th century a soldier could march for a hundred days and only fight one battle. At all other times he'd be relatively safe, at least until the next battle or skirmish. Moreover these battles would be fought with large bodies of men much closer to one another than the firing lines of modern combat, so one felt as thought they were simply another part of a larger body than an individual. Lastly these battle would last for a couple of days at most, assuming it wasn't a siege, whereas modern combat doesn't really stop. That's not to say that people are literally always fighting, just that one is never quite safe, even when not being directly shot at.
