This. The mask wasn't without flaws, sometimes Stanley's pleas for help were able to break through. Compare Stanley's personality at the beginning to how it is at the end. The mask has completely taken over his mind and the physical mask itself is no longer required, hence "Stanley" throwing it into the water.
