He did have a map, it wasn't the very first thing he made but it was close. The first thing he wrote was the scene where they find the direwolves, and he created the entire setting from that. He sketched a rough map of the North, and began fleshing things out as he went.
The finished maps were all drawn by other people though, no doubt based on his notes and sketches.

Anyone else find Lyanna Mormont's character to be a completely nonsensical, unrealistic feel-good character meant to play to the hipster lib fools who film themselves reacting to this show? In Martin's book, Lyanna Mormont is a little girl probably not really in charge of Bear Island in any sense, even temporarily. She's nominally in charge while her older siblings and her mother are off fighting. While Bear Island is an exception to Westerosi gender politics, it still doesn't let cutesy stuff like a little 10 year old running around telling everyone what's what happen. But more importantly, while Bear Island is an exception to prevailing Westerosi gender roles, THE NORTH IS NOT.
Much is made during Robb's campaign of the Mormont women and their role. Dacey Mormont being named a member of his personal guard is met with resistance by the other Northern houses. The North has typical gender expectations. They treat Catelyn fairly dismissively as well. The Northern lords, as written by Martin, are not going to sit there listening to some little girl prattle on or pretend she's a war lord or should be taken seriously.
The omissions of the above-mentioned situations, as well as the omissions of certain entire characters and their situations (Alys Karstark, the runaway heiress damsel in distress who begs Jon's help against her uncles; the wildling 'princess' Val, whom Stannis and his camp all treat as strictly an object to be wed; poor Jeyne Poole), all tend to create a complete lie of a story universe, one that runs directly counter to Martin's and so completely misses his point.
In catering to modern PC hipster audiences raised on lies and nonsense, they've lost the gender reality Martin created and which was so fundamental to his story world. Gender doesn't seem to matter at all in the TV show.
Ser Rodrik Cassel is one of the rare cases of knighthood among the houses that worship the old gods. The tradition of knights was brought to Westeros by the Andals, and it generally involves a squire keeping vigil in a sept all night before being anointed in front of the Seven the next day to become a knight.
It's possible that Rodrik was knighted for his valour at the heat of battle, and he skipped the standing vigil part. He would have taken his vows in a godswood. Jorah Mormont, when he was knighted at Pyke after the Greyjoy Rebellion would have done the same. In Rodrik's case, given his age, he was probably knighted at the War of the Ninepenny Kings, and his achievements may have been overshadowed by Brynden Tully and Barristan Selmy.

Not that guy, but I've read like 9 or 10 of the Malazan books and no they don't really get any better. If you aren't driven onward by a compulsion to figure out how the setting works (which is why I kept reading) then there's little point to it. I barely even remember anything from most of those books. I have faint memories of how the magic system worked and some of the major characters that popped up here and there and some of the races and mythology, but it's mostly just a blur of nonsense.

I was in college and filling the void after finishing book 4 of ASoIaF and waiting for book 5. I read a lot of less than stellar fantasy in those 4 or so years.
But from what I remember mages are connected to magical planes of existence called Warrens, which are also kinda-sorta linked to the existence of the Gods, some of which are just Ascended mortals. I remember there being some kind of limit on how many Warrens a person could connect to but I can't remember how or why that was, but I remember it being a big deal when there was a guy who had access to a shitload of them.
Also Warrens are race-specific, like the Warren of fire works for the T'lan Imass and the Ice warren for those other guys that live in huge glaciers and who the T'lan Imass hate. See just bits and pieces, not even sure if any of that is correct. Also remember some stuff about the extradimensional light and dark pseudo-elves and the shapeshifters.

Was this the most bungled arc of the Season? I'm not trying to soudn like this would have saved Season 6 but really why did they squander Jaime's Riverlands arc so badly? You could tell Jaime had some kind of appreciation or respect for Blackfish and considering the "end" of this arc where he shows a moment of sadness for Blackfish's death and his disdain for Walder Frey you'd assume they'd want to put more time into milking out these interactions so S7 isn't a horribly slow mess and you get to develop Jaime's character and finally make him realize how much of a bitch Cersei is.
Even small things like having 5-10 minute segments where he's at the drawbridge conversing with Blackfish, trading banter, would have made sense and built it up so when 4 or 5 episodes down the line (instead of what was it? 1 or 2?) when Blackfish is killed, you see Jaime begin to change as a person, not to mention you could have Brienne involved in all of this and grow their relationship more while having him realize what a cunt his sister and allies are.
