In her defense re: kidnapping Tyrion, she was basically right. Her theory was that the Lannisters tried to have her son killed and now Ned is endangered by them. Jaime tried to kill Bran, then Joffrey tried to kill Bran, and Cersei is plotting against Ned and Robert. The only things she got wrong - Tyrion did it, and the Lannisters killed Jon Arryn - are both really Littlefinger's fault. If it wasn't for him intentionally fucking her over, she would've been right on the money.
And Tywin going batshit is not her fault. Kidnapping Tyrion is extreme, but considering his family was genuinely guilty, the right reaction would be for them to confess, if not publically then at least to Tywin so he can broker a peace. The reasonable thing, at least, would be to demand Tyrion and wage war on the North, or Riverrun. Instead he went full Mad King and started massacring innocent farmers. I don't think she acted with any expectation for how Tywin would react. Arresting Tyrion was probably a spur of the moment thing, since she happened to be in the same tavern as Tyrion after Littlefinger's hot tip about the Valyrian knife. She seized an opportunity to get the truth, get justice, and secure her family's safety with a hostage.
If Tywin was at all reasonable, he would've seen that she acted out of concern for her family. He could've used the opportunity to reign in his family before they run rampant, and with confirmation of their part in the accused crimes, they could've easily outed Littlefinger as a liar. He could've leveraged Catelyn's injustice against Robert, along with the crown's dependence on Lannister gold, to lower the Stark's position and assets and improve his own. And he could've done this while killing the Stark guard in KL and taking all three Starks hostage, demonstrating that even the lowest Lannister is worth two Stark kids and a Stark lord, along with the lives of several dozen bannermen.
Instead he burned the Riverlands. Now he's dead and everything he worked for is falling apart. And it's a direct result of his stupid decision.
