Stannis lost his army on purpose and used the opportunity to make an escape to find a stronger one because he knew his current army had no chance.
When Brienne finds him he contracts her to follow his orders. Brienne is now stopping at the Vale unbenknownst to CIA and Sansa. She is going to take sweetrobin and get him to give Stannis control of the Vale army. This is why we haven't seen Brienne in a couple episodes
CIA is killed by the knights of the vale and Stannis has the vale army heading back south to king's landing for the throne. Stannis will be the one to confront Dany and battle her initially when she arrives, since King's Landing has no way to defend itself and Stannis is the rightful king and protector of the realm.

not everybody reacts with denial when they learn of a loved one's death. it's a common response, but it's not clearcut and 100% guaranteed.

This time, Cersei blew up an entire building, full of the most powerful people in the city. Right now, on fear alone, she's powerful. Anyone opposing her is relatively weaker and direct opposition to her saying that the throne is hers isn't going to work out. She'll gave them killed by Zombie mountain. She has an army in the city.
