For most of history that's how peasant uprisings tend to end. Kill the leaders and the masses scatter. People only stage revolutions when intelligent leaders take charge and convince them. If the leaders are killed that tends to be the end unless there are other leaders to take over, and in this case literally everyone who could have taken over is now dead.
