Explain the satire in that scene. Satire implies judgement of sorts. It doesn't ridicule, shame or judge Alien at that scene, it is not even humorous and it lacks social criticism once Faith is removed.

you're not wrong, but i think you legitimately just don't know what post-irony is

i mean, that's okay, because it's not very common, but you really can't talk about SPRING BREAKERS without understanding it

i'm basically just repeating myself here but the sincerity and honesty of the film are present specifically to accentuate and expose how absurd all of it is

we can disagree about this and that's fine but you have, at this point, basically derailed this entire thread by throwing an autistic fit over the definition of the word "satire"
>>
>>71301875
of course the characters are extreme archetypes because you wouldn't have such a film with 'basic' spring break type of filmatization but that does not satire make.

Where is the ridicule of these archetypes taken to their extreme? Faith judges them (hue) and that's the only time when the film contemplates on these.
>>
>>71302013
irony, or post-irony aren't the same as satire, and we are debating of Sprang Breakers is or isn't satire. It is definitely post-ironic, but that doesn't make it satire.

the film doesn't judge but we as moral observers do (or at least should). Alien taking 4 jailbait girls to that rapey pool den? Yeah that's pretty shitty. Following a Scarface obsessed drug kingpin around to kill people? Also pretty shitty.

The film is merely a totality/collection of experiences. On its own it is just that. but when viewed by an audience that brings its own morality to what they see, it becomes critique or satire.

Korine isn't interested in judging them, but as moral entities we can't help but do so.
>>
>>71302295

His other films aren't tied to a cultural phenomenon like Spring Breakers, which puts much more darkness and moral ambiguity under the microscope than his other work.

There's even a central arc that mirrors Scarface very closely, which itself was a critique on the American Dream (i.e. consumerism).

As much as Korine would love to escape the morality of what he puts on screen, it's impossible.

Faith is the only angle to condemn the lifestyle. She gets removed from the film shortly after.

The director clearly tells the moralist character to phuck off
>>
>>71303042
no he doesn't, he just represents a moral objector to the spring break scene. The fact that Alien dies in a hail of bullets should tell you all you need to know about that lifestyle.
>>
>>71303042
what about Cotty, who abandons the other girls and Alien after being shot? she's exposed to the reality of what they're doing and chooses to reject it, furthering the idea that Brit, Candy, and Alien are essentially just living out a fantasy

100% agree with you on Finding Dory. Re-watching Finding Nemo some of the animation really is clunky at points and doesn't flow right. Also some of the textures are bit poor compared to modern technology. But it's still good because the story works much more and isn't as wacky or unbelieveable.
>>
>>71303127
Doesn't make it a satire.
>>71303109
The fact that two bitches nail down the entire gangster hideout while going at the lifestyle makes your point.. meaningless? They appropriated what Alien was preaching (even if Alien ime doesn't buy it himself) and make it out

Also how haven't you seen Toy Story?

>>71303196

they make it out because it's just their vacation. They aren't steeped in that life like Alien is (yet). Who knows if they continue down that path in the future, but as with all gun and drug culture, it would inevitably end in death or imprisonment.

It's also about female empowerment (they make him suck their gun dicks). The arc of the film is their journey from cherubic innocents to conquerors of spring break.

It's a happy ending tinged with darkness.

This is surprising to me because I thought it had the rare achievement of my being boring. Ripping this opinion slightly from the top review, most exploitation feel like they have enough good content for a trailer then pad it out to feature-length, whereas this actually felt like a film worth of exploitation, constant barrage of big american titties and big american motor cars and big american violence.

that one aspect alone does not make it a satire, you're correct. but you also have to take into consideration the other elements of the film. in particular: the sound of guns being loaded or fired accentuates almost every scene transition (it's even used to cut to the credits at the end) - is that really just a stylistic touch, or is it intended to remind you how dark and ugly the girls' fantasy really is?

How is it passing any judgement? Only Faith serves the judgement and she gets blown the fuck out from the film the moment she starts to bitch. The film wasn't for *them* the moralistic view point it was to see the idea taken to the extreme and see what the fuck happens without much pondering on moralfagging.

>>
>>71304649
Cotty was bailed out because I honestly think they forgot they had third bitch in the film lmfao.

The two semen demons, after they literally and figuratively dump Faith and faith in narrative and story are what's important. That is the film's ideology of Spring Break taken to the maximum extreme and there's not much moralfagging in there.

And just because it observes something, like impassivity, doesn't mean it serves any sort of judgement or ridicule on the characters. This is like saying portraying slavery is promoting it.

and all of this still doesn't make it a satire in anyway.

It is literally not my fault if you read your own subtexts to it and place your own value judgements for no good reason there. The film and its narrative is what matters, not yours.

Chronological is good; that is how I did it. There is an amazing leap in quality around the mid-90s, with A Moment of Romance III and Lifeline, and To maintains that quality nearly unabated until the present. Everything before that seems like apprentice work and can be skipped if you only want the great stuff.

My personal favourites:

Sparrow
Throw Down
Breaking News
Exiled
Election
Office
Blind Detective

they're all pretty similar tonally but his comedies (especially those co-directed with Wai Ka-Fai) are a little obtuse for Western audiences. I like them but they all run a little long and the threadbare "plots" aren't very interesting.

So skip the comedies.

How we receive the film IS the film. The film isn't some kind of unopened box or unassailable object. Art is conversation.

Nothing wrong with his romantic comedies. Don't Go Breaking My Heart and the sequel, My Left Eye Sees Ghosts and Romancing in Thin Air are all great.
>>
>>71305567
eh, both DGBMH and My Left Eye were a little too pedantic and uncompelling for me.

Romancing is like two superfluous subplots too long. (and the ending felt like a ripoff of Kurosawa's After Life) Otherwise it's a masterpiece.

The viewer receives the film and the film only, the film and the creator are detached in that sense and anything external to the film doesn't matter when observing the specific film.

Tying the film's narrative to your own context and narrative must exclude you from appreciating ton of films.

Spring break is a collective context from which the film draws inspiration and comments on, however indirect. Having white people appropriating black culture, rapey situations, hypersexualisation, worship of guns, money and consumerism -- all that isn't some kind of moral void where you can absolve the film on the pretext of fiction. it's exaggerated in a specific way, a comic way, a destructive way, for a reason. That's embedded in the film.

>all that isn't some kind of moral void where you can absolve the film on the pretext of fiction
I can, since only the film's narrative matters within the single specific, observed, film. If I were to write a paper about 'spring break culture' and its portrayal in media, that'd be different. There's no reason to tie film to a narrative other than its own when observing the specific film.

The film might fail in portraying certain ideas, that might come to you if you get information outside the film, but that is a strike against film since the film can only stand on its own.
