Aubrey is both. It is his rank, because his ship is too small for him to be a captain.

IMDB:
Russell Crowe ... Capt. Jack Aubrey
He was literally Capt Aubrey.
So someone else has to be the Master, even if Aubrey is the commander.

stupid flick, never understood why those men were willingly wasting their lives for some queen instead of landing on tropical beach and living there happily and in peace.

I read the series. The title "master and commander" is his rank in the first book. The film includes portions of later books, after he has been promoted. The title of the film refers to his rank in the first book, while IMDB obviously refers to the rank he had in the movie. It makes sense that most people in the audience would have considered him a captain, and because a lot of the film borrowed from later books, it made sense to "promote" him.

it was pic related.
Robert Pugh ...
Mr. Allen, Master
Never would have guessed.
His role was so small for him to be in the title.
The movie is deep AF

The title, originally "master and commander,"originated in the 18th century to describe naval officers who commanded ships of war too large to be commanded by a Lieutenant but too small to warrant the assignment of a post-captain and (before about 1770) a sailing-master; the commanding officer served as his own Master.
They were still called Captain though.

disgusting anglo propaganda

In the book it's an American ship they're pursuing. They changed it to French because amerilards can't stand to be the bad guys in anything.
>>71297315
it released around the same time as that Sinbad film that changed them from arabs to greeks to avoid triggering americans too.
Pretty poor time for the americans in film,

It was Spanish. The French capture them later.

>In Gibraltar, Captain Aubrey receives another mission, to sail HMS Surprise to protect British whalers in the Pacific Ocean from USS Norfolk
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_and_Commander:_The_Far_Side_of_the_World
>The film combines elements from 13 different novels of Patrick O'Brian, but the basic plot mostly comes from The Far Side of the World. However, in the film version, the action takes place in 1805, during the Napoleonic wars, instead of 1813 during the Anglo-American war, as the producers wished to avoid offending American audiences.
Get fucked fatty.
>>71297520
kek, you never read the books so you rely on wikipedia. In the very first book they take on a much bigger ship, a Spanish frigate. That is what the movie resembled. The battle events of the book Far Side of the World don't correlate strongly with the film.

This. Mini series based on a good book series, it expands in depth on the British Navy through the eyes of an officer who starts at the bottom and works his way up over the years.
