Xena jumped the shark hard in season 5, never recovered even after they fired Orci & Kurtzman and brought back R.J. Stewart. There are a few good episodes in season 6 but other than that the last two seasons are shit

One thing I really liked about the last couple seasons is Gabrielle's arc, I found her annoying in the the earlier seasons but she finally began to mature and become interesting, not to mention less preachy.
Still it's all weighed down but a plethora of terrible ideas (Chakram of Light, Twilight of the Gods, Amazon High, Eve, etc) and yes, you can tell the production suffered because of LOTR.
I'm tempted to say I wish the show had ended with S4, but then we would never have gotten Old Ares Had A Farm which is one of my favorite episodes.
