I blame it on the war on drugs mostly. A lot of people have limited or even no access to quality alternative mind altering substances and so they resort to alcohol not realizing how low tier it is as a drug. Alcohol is a drug, but it's a very shitty drug. Lowered social inhibitions is one of the least interesting forms of altered consciousness I can think of. Its route of administration is one of the worst kinds too, you have to ingest something with calories that has to go through your stomach. Very unpleasant, compared with a nice smoke or snorting lines where you can do it whenever and not have to deal with GI annoyances.

I've been drinking coffee since I was 16, I genuinely love the taste of it. When I was 16 it did make me feel more grown up for sure. That aspect stopped playing a role in why I was drinking it a week after that though and just became about the taste.

It isn't a very interesting drug, but it isn't actively shit like alcohol is. There's good reason to want a nice, mild stimulant, same reason cigarettes are nice. Beer tastes awful, generally does bad things to the digestive system and your physical comfort, and all you get out of it is slight dissociation / reduction in anxiety. If you really enjoy that feeling, you'd be much better off with benzos.
