The original Drill Sergeant was the flaw, luckily that guy was in there. Like Dr. Strangelove a single great actor saved the flawed concept.

He didn't send Pyle home when it was abundantly clear that he was not fit for duty both mentally and physically.
The opening, the murder suicide, the sniper scene, and the final few minutes where everyone walks through fire are perfect.
Rest is pretty much forgettable.
