Pretty much this. Universal saw how successful the period set horror movie franchise Warner Bros. has and decided to copy it.
I like the director. Absentia, Oculus, Before I Wake were all good. Not sure how he got roped into doing this.

well the director who is doing the upcoming Light's Out which looks terrifying is doing Annabelle 2. I feel like these small time horror directors take these sequels to gain more recognition and establish a working relationship with a studio.
