The whole series is, "Badass commoner rises through the ranks through sheer asskicking power, kills Frenchmen, outwits and usually kills snobby Englishmen, fucks every hole in Iberia."

The only way to do it is to realise how ridiculous it is, how Cornwell just wanted a self-insert and framed it as a historical novel around Sharpe, and enjoy the ride. I loved the books, but I don't pretend they're anything more than the /tv/ of literature.
