Yeah I just saw Chimes in theaters a few months ago. It was really excellent. Most notable was the way it explored the interplay between Shakespearean tragedy and comedy. It actually reminded me of movies like Happiness, Boogie Nights, and Ratcatcher where the film doesn't allow you to feel a single emotion. A great example is the battle scene where these goofy shots of Falstaff stumbling around give way to some very dark moments of soldiers dyeing in the mud.

That may be the case for some of his films but its not fair to say that about his whole filmography. For example Manhattan is really interesting visually and Allen has worked with top DPs like Almendros and Nykvist. Its hard to also say that his films are poorly written, some may be, but some are great stories with great dialog and compelling characters.

I guess that depends on what interests you. But I think I get what you mean, something that pushes the envelope of the medium capabilities, something like Ken Jacobs?
Also, the DPs in the Allen movies don't just make the film look pretty they perform a "narrative" function by setting the mood and playing with light to convey certain emotions. Thats what I think at least.

Good point, cine and soundtrack were both great. The ending just really bothered me, seemed to defy the realism of the film just to make a point. Which isn't inherently bad but it didn't really work here. I understand why you like it though.
