What are some true horrorkinos?

I.e. horror films that succeed through establishment of mood and atmosphere, rather than gratuitous in-your-face gore.

the unforunate reality is that good horror is a fucking gift and most of it is either banking off whatever phenomenon is present such as nukes or zombies and I'll omit to you that The Thing is my favorite horror movie and none come even close.

Absolute classic, no doubt in my mind.

When censor bellends at the BBFC tried to cut the film they found that everything they took out still couldn't undo the film's relentless air of dread and terror.
As a result they gave up and it was released without any cuts at all.

Some one even referred to it as the Pornography of Terror which as a fan of the film I can agree with.
Its gonzo nastiness that dispenses with a lot of the typical story tropes and gets right down to scaring the shit out of you with its nightmarish atmosphere and terrifying imagery.

The film is lightening in a bottle. And it has never been adequately replicated by its own sequels or any of the numerous hill billy massacre copycats

I loved the movie but I couldn't suspend disbelief about the group of teens being so incompetent at defending themselves. I know they were hippy scum but even then. >Like a creepy movie for teenagers
No, it was a horror movie intended for patricians that missed the mark. Much like Innkeepers, House of the Devil, Kill List, etc. These movies didn't quite work for me and overall I didn't really like them, but I can still recognize the fact they were made with heart and soul with good intentions. They weren't made for teeny boppers like Ouija, Devil's Due, Devil Inside, Dark Skies, The Forest, The Boy, The Pyramid, Unfriended, Friend Request, The Other Side of the Door, The Darkness, etc etc etc etc the list goes on and fucking on.

To be fair It Follows only missed the mark with the beach scene onwards. Everything before that was great.

>I loved the movie but I couldn't suspend disbelief about the group of teens being so incompetent at defending themselves.
What the fuck are you talking about? Leatherface stealth kills the first 3 kids, then there's two left over, skinny girl Sally and a fucking cripple in a wheelchair. Not to mention Leatherface may be retarded, but he is fucking huge, mad strong and wielding a fucking chainsaw. Everyone is murdered before they have a chance to report back to the group that there's a crazy serial killer in the area.

Sally and wheelchair bound Frank are left and they still don't realize there's a serial killer. Next thing that happens Frank get's sliced out of nowhere and Sally is the only one left. What is your idea of smart kids? Psychic kids?

Loved it.
>>
>>71188047
I hated this film for everything except Anthony Hopkins.
The ending:
"Oh look, we rounded out the love story because now they're together in Heaven."
Nope, the whole reason Dracula flipped out is because she killed herself and went to Hell. If they're both in Hell, that blows. If one's in Hell and the other's in Heaven they never get to see each other for the rest of eternity.

But I can get passed all of that quite easily. What can't I get passed?
>monster rape

>>
>>71192367
I wouldn't say it worked for tone as much as it did for characters. I don't think there's a single poorly written character in the movie. They actually had the balls to make the person most likely to be the killer be the killer.

The second film was the worst imo because of how many characters there were and how thin they had to spread the development. When the killer was revealed, I had no idea who it was as I completely forgot all of their scenes by the end.

Third movie would have been the best if they hadn't dropped the satire that was literally the whole franchise's gimmick.

I actually quite enjoyed the fourth film.

What's a Bava movie?

A movie directed by Mario Bava. See above.

I watched several Dario Argento movies.

Deep Red, Suspiria and the bird with the crystal plumage were good, Phenomena was interesting but felt like it could have been better.

the only other argento film I really want to see is Inferno, the trailer looks amazing (although I am well aware that all the coolest visual ideas are used in the trailer)

Yeah I was confused because someone mentioned Black Sunday, but there's also another Black Sunday movie directed by John Frankenheimer, so I thought it was a nickname of his or something.

I saw it in theaters as preteen and it was literally the most terrifying experience of my life. Had trouble sleeping for a week, and developed a fear of unmarked VHS tapes that lasted years. It still holds up today, and Watts is a great actress.

Don't care much for Signs though

Tesis is top-notch in my opinion. It outclasses 8 mm in every way.

That film's aged beautifully. Love the late 70's setting.

was spoopy when watching it as a kid but didn't like it as an adult.

Just rewatched both of these. First one blew me away all over again. Such a great build up, atmosphere, and backstabbing.
No idea why they made a second one.

It's not scary. It has a soundtrack thst belongs in a zombie movie. The characters are awful. The main character is awful. The overall decisions the group makes for the main character are dumb. The entity that follows could have been truly menacing and scary but was just human skins. 2/10 would not watch again
