I think it was a bit of a wasted opportunity to let Littlefinger save the North; it was sort of poorly executed. Firstly, Sansa should have told Jon and insinuated Littlefinger would never come and that they can't risk waiting. There should have been a scene where Ramsay thinks about possible allies of the Starks after the scene where Sansa lies and says Ramsay told her about the Blackfish. That would have been ironic; that Ramsay actually is thinking about these things. However, Ramsay should have underestimated the Vale, saying that Littlefinger's forces are agents of the Lannisters and that he doesn't know that Sansa has escaped, showing the audience (really driving it home) that Ramsay isn't as clever as he thinks he is.
THEN in episode 9 the Vale should've come in at the eleventh hour. Sure it's not a le epin twist, but it makes more sense thematically within the story that we got.

Nah. LF has been LF with her in many moments, this much is true. He has held back tid bits of pertinent information at key moments from her (which is exactly what she is doing to Jon now,) but the one thing he never did was willfully put her into harms way. LF has been walking a razor's edge with Sansa: he loves her, but he's LF, so he still has to make his thing with her work within his grand scheme. It's a character flaw. We all have them.
He didn't know anything about Ramsey, he said so himself when speaking to Ramsey. He calculated that, even though he was handing her over to the Boltons, her name and Roose's temperament would be all that was necessary to keep her relatively safe. He miscalculated. When he says he's sorry to Sansa, he means it. She's the only thing he actually cares about, and even then it's through his own twisted worldview. He and Sansa are twinners in every possible way, it's just he's older and has already been down the road of a dreamer and idealist in Westeros that she is currently trying to navigate.
