Martin really isn't that great of a writer. A history buff and a dude who knows Campbell's journey of the hero very well for sure, yes, but not a great writer.
All he ever did was include a bunch of unnecessary characters, most of them repeats, and used them as Red Herrings. Ned == Robb == Jon. They're the same character, but because he put in 3 of them we all think this shit's well written because he killed off a character before they filled out their hero's journey. Big woop.
Of all the characters who've died on GoT none of them are surprising, because there's always someone there to fill in the exact spot where the other character left off. You can't really blame D&D when Martin himself has no idea what to do. He put all his good characters into training, which gives them boring arcs. All the bad guys have no good guys to play off of so they've other become heroes (Jaimie) incompetent (Cersei) or just pure nothing (Joeffery and Ramsay).
George RR Martin doesn't write good characters. He writes clever plot twists and chunkily puts them in the story until he can subvert the story temporarily.
The only characters that have ever actually mattered: Jamie, Dany, Arya, Jon, and Bran will live to the end, because at this point it's shitty writing for that not to happen.
Either George RR Martin is a shitty writer who just likes edgelord plot twists or he's a one trick pony who blew his load in book 3 and his now trying to clean up after his own mess.
You can't really blame D&D. At least they've done their part in streamlining the needlessly complex story and made it a little more cinematic along the way.
