This is the set up for coming back to kill Cersei and save kings landing from the second attempt to burn it down. The wild fire is sitting there waiting for Cersei to find it.
But ya Jaimie is a shit and the only way to attone is the black. After he kills Cersei he should head North to help with the Others. Though the longer it gets into the books the less likely a big army of the living seems to be.
If he survives to the end of the books he will be fit to go home and become Lord of the rock.

Chest barding will ward against those pikes somewhat and then a horse crashing into your shield fucks you up good and proper, so even front on, the cavalry would have fucked the pikemen but it wasn't front on, because then the wildings would have fucked the shield wall from behind. Those Bolton infantry were fucked the instant the cavalry entered the field.
