I don't think he was latent homosexual. Latent / semi trans is more likely. Possibly bi. But he definitely was attracted to women. Did you miss the part where Herzog egged that woman into admitting she'd fucked him? And that wasn't even the woman he intentionally died with. Dude hated men; prolly self-hating to the point he didn't like to sound like one and wanted to just go be a bear or woman or whatever not to be a conqueror of the Earth.
