Their humor translates horribly to western audiences so it isn't particularly surprising that westerners tend not to watch their rom coms.

the first 50% or so of the movie is completely normal, then it goes full retard to the point where you don't even know what's happening. I couldn't end up finishing the movie because of the inane ridiculousness that comes out of nowhere

Sort of this, Korea was getting shit on from the moment we have recorded history of it.
First china was constantly invading them, killing them, taking slaves and concubines, then the Japanese, then civil war and now half the country is basically in the middle ages.

Outside of Seoul South Korea is a shithole and the people in Seoul are all depressed or filled with silicone from so much plastic surgery.
