Her purpose is to kill him. Either she succeeds or she fails and gets killed in the process. I'd be willing to bet she succeeds AND she dies doing so.
There is only one main character alive and still "themselves" at the end of the novels: Tyrion. Dany dies in Childbirth. Jon and Sansa kill each other over the right to rule the North (Catlyn's black blood being passed on to her kids is the reason Winter returned, but Jon has the Stark blood without the Hoare taint.)
At the end of the novels there is no Hoare descendant in Winterfell, but neither is there a Stark. The child Dany dies giving birth to is Jon's, so he's a valid Stark (magic doesn't care about bastardy or patrilineage) so there's hope he'll be able to drive back the Others in the future... a Dream of Spring (and our bittersweet ending)

Everything she has done this season has been smart. Her warnings to Jon about how Ramsey will trick and and witholding the Vale from him were brilliant moves. The show (especially season 6) is FILLED with glaring plotholes and inconsistencies (like davos character doing a 180 about everything this season) and a big action scene doesn't make up for that.
