In pre-gunpowder battles, the vast majority of deaths occur when one part of the army routs. Ramsay being somewhat clever and sort of a veteran of battles would know this.
That is to say, closing entirely in on your enemy makes them fight to the death like cornered badgers. You don't want your men to be fighting thrashing, animalistic cornered men fighting for their survival, you want your men to run them down when they start to break lines.
If you surround them on 3 sides instead of all around, it gives them an opportunity to run, at which point you simply kill them with ease.

Honestly it's a huge huge improvement over the last couple episodes. The cinematography and acting was on point, problem is the writing itself was still weak. Why the fuck didn't Salsa tell Jon about the Vale knights? Why did Sansa look horrified when Jon was beating Ramsay up, then smirk when he was eaten alive? I still don't know why Sansa did not tell Jon that she had the Vale's support as it would have saved a lot of lives and Jon could have perished before they showed up. To me, it's either that the earlier conversation she had with Jon about questioning his battle tactics against Ramsay, yet not knowing what to do herself, or that she wanted to give a chance for Jon to die so that she's the undisputed heir to Winterfell.
I think it's more like she had no idea what the fuck to do, but it's either bad writing or pure stupidity on her part as to why she wouldn't tell Jon that the Vale were coming to battle with them.
As for Dany, her scene tonight was pretty cool as far as Dragons destroying shit. That said, this bullshit banter back and forth with the 'strong women' is getting insane. It seems to be the recurring theme in this fucking show now. All of the men are weak and incompetent and the women are strong and determined to rule.

Instinct in that situation is to run as quickly as you can to safety. There would be a horrible fear of slowing down at all. Zig-zagging is also not necessarily the best option, as the distance he had to run was enormous. The longer you run, the more tired you become, the slower you move. Anything he could do would have a drawback, and it's perfectly reasonable to just run as fast as you possibly can and hope for the best.

Joffrey's death was actually pretty dramatic, significant plot wise, and meaningful. Ramsay just kind of got rekt and doesn't set up any clear progression of the plot or aftermath. Maybe next episode we'll learn what Ramsay's death really results in, but Joffrey's death was way better in every way shape and form. Ramsay as a villain wasn't anywhere near as interesting, well acted, or humanized. I don't really give a fuck if the ultimate of ultimate evils dies, like Ramsay. He's not a character, he's a caricature of evil. There's nothing I can really relate to with him. Joffrey actually gave me strong, but mixed emotions in his death scene. Ramsay dying just kind of makes me sad they ended the episode with that, and not something more... Significant or interesting.
