While its pretty to look at I didn't really find it impressive. To me it clearly just looked like they painted over photographs to make it look realistic and after doing a little research I found out that's exactly what they did. The actual animation isn't anything amazing.

It's got a fantastic conclusion. Despite looking fairly derivative it's really one of a kind, you can tell just from watching just how much work went into the series. Perfectly captures the feelings of adolescence, that separation and growing-up anxiety you mentioned as well.

Nagano isn't a fan of people adapting his work, FSS is the only thing he has total control over. Sunrise just made that OVA in the 80s basically without his permission.
That being said, he did like the FSS movie adaptation, which was a straight adaptation of the manga's first story arc. He just wished they asked first, and hoped they could've used some alternative rock for the score as he was a fan of it, instead of the full classical score it used.
