I'm at S4E3 and this show has really gone off the rails. Does it ever get back to being good?

Yes. Season 4 is by far the worst one. Season 5 is maybe one of the best ones yet, and seasons 6 and 6 are just as good.
the only poor seasons to me are seasons 3 and 4.
