Roman Empire had been doing great for generations by the Emperor selecting generals as his successor. Marcus Aurelius was the last of the good emperors. Commodus was a spoiled brat who thought he deserved to be Emperor cause of his father's accomplishments, instead of Maximus, a capable leader who had proved himself in the battlefield. He murdered his father and brought the entire Roman Empire to ruin.
Seriously, the movie doesn't do justice to what a disastrous self-absorbed figure Comodus was. He tried to rename the city after himself. He's basically a Joffrey on steroids.
