I get that women would like it because it's about women, but I never understood why more women wouldn't complain about how shitty all the character are. Yeah, the main character is a woman, and that's kind of cool (although, again, you can see similar trends in other, better done production), but it's not exactly a great step that she's a complete piece of shit.
I felt kind of the same way about Jessica Jones. Yeah, a woman superhero is cool, but one that spends the entire run of a series crying, running away from responsibility, being a shitty person, and obsessing over a man isn't the best way to introduce a female hero. If one has a checklist to complete, then only that point helps their case against or for this show. If you watch it with a clear mind, you'll find some quality, if imperfect, entertainment. They also have advanced stats on who is watching what, and its why we had like three season of OITNB getting green lit before this season was released. I think they are being shortsighted by comparing streaming to the 00's web bubble. The future of TV and film is streaming, most people are pivoting away from cable, or being born into a world where streaming is the norm and having cable isn't even considered.
I imagine the big players in the streaming space will come and go as we move forward, it's still in its infancy as a delivery system. But I don't doubt Netflix, and their ability to manage their content. They have the best backend analytics when it comes to who is watching their shows, data that traditional cable could only dream of. Traditional cable has had to rely on surveys and second hand accounts of who is watching what. Netflix can see who is watching what shows, at what times they are watching, whether or not they finish an episode, how much they watch in one sitting, is there a shared director/actor/writer between the content they are watching, etc. Having breakdowns of that quality over the demos consuming your content is invaluable.
The most important thing for Netflix right now, is content. Whether its award nominated, mass watched, or just filler. Eventually studios will get so expensive to license from, or completely shut them out as they move toward with their own services, that all they will be left with is their own content. That also why you see them being aggressive up front in buying movie rights, or taking over shows like Arrested Development and The Killing. You eat that cost up front, and from there on you don't have to worry about how that content is handled. Being able to go one and done, and have total control over your own product, is exactly what streaming services should be focusing on.

She's a good character because she's real. However the show became a viral success and instead of ending it season 2 like they were supposed to it became watered down garbage in order to make it into a now 5 or 6 season show or more.

Season 3 is so abysmal and I can't believe I spent so much time binge watching it. Piper is one of the most obnoxious and pretentious characters ever written in any show ever, with her being a complete cunt in the entirety of season 3 and her annoying speeches, I ended up skipping past every scene she was in. That being said, most white character and the latinas are all very tolerable characters and I'd say it's worth watching for them.
Season 1 and Season 2? Great. SO much less preachy about everything and they actually went with a plot with a "big-bad" in them, Pornstache and Vee were very entertaining villains for the most part.
I forget his name, but the one guard in Season 3 just leaves mid-season to not even return and proves how bad the pacing is, he's also an IRL dumbass SJW.

The whole thing really missed the mark politically. The whole black lives matter thing is about the impact of actual racism. Racism had literally nothing to do with why Poussey got pinned down during that clusterfuck, and had little to do with the mishandling of the situation in the aftermath. It's honestly kind of insulting to portray an accident as an example of something that belongs among the blatantly abusive and negligent deaths of black americans at the hands of police. And not only that, but to lazily put the only signs of racism during the aftermath in the mouths of literal neonazis who had no actual influence over the situation.
The death works very well as an example of a really poor system creating really shitty situations and even death, demonstrating the true price of cutting costs, 'how much money is a life worth' etc. But mixing that up with Black Lives Matter stuff just doesn't work, and only seems to simply be pissing people off from what I've read of audience reactions.
This is pretty much the worst time there's ever been to kill off a minority character. After all the real life black deaths going on, the recent movement against queer deaths in media, and now the fucking Orlando shooting, like holy shit, people are really sick of seeing this sort of thing, even when the whole point is "this sucks". I know the season was all finished before most of these events, but yikes, what luck.
And not only that, but they went and prefaced her death with the cringily cliche "look how amazing her future looks!" bullshit, which is just cheap writing and ticks all the cliche boxes for "lol just kidding minorities can't achieve happiness."
