I watched Eisenstein in Guanajuato, didn't think much of it either way, but I loved the digital effects in the film. Superimposing actors onto digital images and twisting the room around to seem larger, those kinds of thing. Any other movies that don't shy away from the digital like that?

I've watched 'artistic' movies by fags like bergman and theyre just boring and awful. It's not that I don't have the attention span for it, I read long non-YA books all the time. Artsy movies are usually just awful, and even if they weren't the shit in my post would still be good. pretending to like film as an art is so low effort and pathetic. Ok, you sat down in front of a screen for 7 hours and watched polish people be miserable, youre such a fucking intellectual. New /tv/ is cancer with all the capeshit, but you wannabe film buffs are so much worse. You unironicly think that watching pretentious nonsense makes you better than other people. i'm not actually that invested in whether or not you approve of EX MACHINA. the issue that i take with you is your use of reductive phrases like "meme flick". it's the sign of someone far more interested in appearances than actual art.

>>70953065
>spout memes
it actually does not do this. there's a scene that was heavily latched onto by a culture that didn't understand it, and maybe the direction is at fault. the intent of the dance scene was clearly to unsettle with the awkwardly observational camera and disingenuous music, as any cinematically literate person should understand. it's not the film's fault that its "fanbase" chose to latch onto it as comedic.

are you sure it's me that's doing this? like i said, i don't really care whether or not someone shares my tastes, and at no point have i really argued in favor of EX MACHINA. basically, my issue is people ever referring to a film as a meme, because, as i stated earlier, it's reductive, and reductionism is the enemy of artistic appreciation.

like i said, his style is functional, though i'd like to add that it also retains some level of his identity. he's not a true auteur - the quality of his work is highly dependent on both the script and the actors. he hasn't yet delivered a disappointment, so i'm more than willing to give him credit for his successes.

>its deakins cinematography highlight real
have you seen any of Villeneuve's films from before he started working with Deakins? POLYTECHNIQUE and ENEMY are both quite good.

>If you try to describe me his style, you end up describing the screenplay or Deakins cinematography.
your opinion of the films themselves notwithstanding, i think Villeneuve's style is very easy to define: he tends towards fluid camera movement and takes that are above average in length, but has the restraint to avoid indulging in oners or excessively held shots. he also has a focus on very precise framing. it's simple, yet effective for the genres that he works in.
>>
>>70954183

if it's Deakins' cinematography, why is it still present in his earlier films, and not present in some films that Deakins has worked on? i really don't think you understand what you're talking about here.
>>
>>70954329

>>

>>
>>70954385
>wetback
he's Canadian, but okay.
>>
>>70954299
Im not >>70954299 but to answer your question, it varies greatly between directors. There are people like Stanley Kubrick who are present and in control of every stage of the production. He would assist from the very beginning in the writing process to the very end in the editing process. However there are also directors like the contemporary Woodie Allen who are much more like overseers. Allen only really makes small adjustments during the production and will go days without even talking to actors. What you can attribute to the director is ultimately decided by which director it is, however I think after watching several movies from someones filmography, it becomes clear what they do.

Also a side point, how do you guys approach discussing bad acting? I usually am able to attribute it to either a bad actor, a bad director, or a bad script but sometimes there doesn't seem to be a clear answer and I don't know who to "blame".

Acting is about the last of things I think of when watching film, that's why I can stomach Mann's newer films (he clearly can't direct his actors).

I'd consider production team (the ones that are involved first handed in shooting a scene for example) a team that can enable each other to far outperform their usual *level* and elevate, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts".
>>
>>70954748
>he clearly can't direct his actors
what makes you say that?
>>
>>70954899
Oh, sure we can argue that IT IS intentional, since all of his late career films involve similar off beat *acting*, but if it is I don't like it, but then again - I don't really care.

Why do I say, because honestly I've only seen same garbage acting in telenovelas that used to air here at 8AM.

Just look at the Chink Officer Male Model in Blackhat, he fucking changes his way of.. doing the same thing for no reason at least 4 times in the film

its like he has no idea wat to do
>>
>>70954929
i wasn't arguing anything. was just curious about your opinion. thanks for taking the time to type up an explanation.
>>
>>70954958
I get he is going intentionally against the convention, tries to make stuff intimate but due to weak directing/writing (and in Blackhat) due to terrible actors it is just not convincing.

Rohmer and Godard have also off beat acting, ie. not conventional yet they're actually convincing due to having better actors and everything else pretty much.

idk lol im just a boy watching films

Not the original poster but I'd say there is a difference between the 'cinematic universe' type films where the focus is on branding and merchandising rather than an actual passion for film or creativity and original films/storylines.

That's obviously not to say all original movies are good, but they in general at least feel a bit less like a product than a film

They explain the reasons for adding it pretty clearly in the news post

Basically the reason is that adding it is fairly simple and doesn't really hurt anybody, but can actually be good/helpful to those who want it

So we want to be positive and proactive about how you would like to appear in others’ activity feeds, and how you would like others to refer to you in comments. You should be able to legitimize who you are when you’re on Letterboxd. Using a member’s correct personal pronoun is one of the most basic ways of showing respect for their identity.

Why would it bother anyone, the big banner is pretty annoying but that's one click of an x

pronouns are hardly even used on the site (as far as I can tell only adding to watch list, and commenting on specifically your own list/reviews?) and if you are really genuinely anti-trans then maybe just don't follow them, which I imagine you don't anyway?
>>
>>70958514

How about instead of all these new pronouns we just lump them all under 'it' if they really aren't content with him or her.

or they could just do it as they did it. If I log in to my letterboxd right now and go to my activity feed, there is literally no difference to as it was before, I can't even see a pronoun. I don't know why you keep using 'we', you don't work for letterboxd, you didn't 'cave into any demands'. They made a decision that doesn't affect you and you're being angry about it for reasons that aren't aren't particularly obvious. Maybe it will affect people that are currently having issues with their mental health because they are being called the pronoun they don't want to be called, maybe it won't help a single person, but I literally don't care.

>>70958611
So people can refer to you correctly in the comments. like it says right there in that post you just quoted.

>>70958656
I think it probably is needless, but like I said above maybe it isn't, but ultimately it doesn't affect me (and probably not anyone in this thread), the anger just seems pointless and weird

>>
>>70958825
Like I said in the comment above, it really doesn't seem like it has much use, but it's not hurting people, maybe it will help some users

And I really don't think the addition of pronouns to letterboxd will be the thin end of anything. I don't think there will be some future where somehow transsexuals are everywhere, and even if there is nobody will be citing the web site letterboxd dot com as the turning point that begun to change anything

you still haven't answered the question of why pronouns beyond they are necessary, cuck. it's come from a mad tumblr sjw subculture (not unlike 4chan in terms of how fringe/extreme many of its ideas about society are) and yet it is permeating mainstream society and media through fear-mongering, twitter-bashing, and perpetual offendedness. this has all come about from a shouty and vicious minority and by sticking up for them you are sticking up for the ultra-pc brigade, censorship, and the power to arrest people for being mean on the social media.

I don't think it is 'necessary'. But I just don't see what harm it brings me, a user of letterboxd that they've implemented this, and don't know how this relates to censorship or being arrested for being mean on social media

I don't understand why people can't just think 'this doesn't affect me, I don't care about it' and then go watch a movie instead of posting angrily online to nobody that wants to listen

Alright, giving this a shot

432,620 / 100 (let's just say this dude is 100 years old)
= 4,326 films a year
x 1.75 (in hours, between 90-120 minutes in a hour)
= 7570.5 hours of film over a year

7570.5 / 24
= 315.4375

315.4375 days in a year spent watching movies, and doing nothing else.

315.4375 / 365.25
= 0.863620808

86% of this dudes life, from birth to death, has been spent watching films.

Was this a case of an ultra vocal minority calling for this to be introduced though?

Was letterboxd really threatened/harrassed or even just politely requested to introduce genders? As far as I can tell they just did it because they thought it would be a nice thing to do and was simple to implement.

Your talk of a loudly shouting minority getting the site to cater to them doesn't really seem to reflect reality, or at least not anything I've seen?
