The only non-literature form of media to capture the Lovecraft atmosphere is actually a video game, Bloodborne

the entire aesthetic, the unfathomable danger lurking everywhere, the theme of insanity (which you can also catch), unimaginable horrors that make you go mad from looking at them
you can't really fully capture the lovecraft aesthetic because it relies on NOT seeing whatever it is being discussed, since the imagination can conjure much worse things than any creative artist, but Bloodborne is certainly a respectable attempt

Kill yourself etc
You see why you're wrong?
>>
>>70935186
>>70935146

no

the connecting feature in art is that one person has a creative vision (there are a few exceptions). this person either

>creates his vision
or
>gets a group a people to help create his vision

this is why film, painting, movies, music are special. they inherently are human.

video games are the result of a thinktank trying to not only appeal to a demographic of pathetic "gamers" who like a certain style, but crafting a story that as many people can understand as possible.

real art is a result of a creative spark.
video games are the result of a bunch of nerds trying to make something cool.

Yes, as Lovecraft was the most popular (imo, unfortunately) author of the genre.

People often bring up Blackwood, Chambers, Maachen, Lieber, Hodgson, and others as big influences of the genre.
>>
>>70936168
Poe was in both.

Being inspired by someone is unrelated to what genre they write in.

It's a good story. Beyond the castle setting and the Victorian soiree there's not a lot that's Gothic about it. It's like you can see HPL trying to really go the distance but just doesn't get there.

When, long ago, the gods created Earth
In Jove's fair image Man was shaped at birth.
The beasts for lesser parts were next designed;
Yet were they too remote from humankind.
To fill the gap, and join the rest to Man,
Th'Olympian host conceiv'd a clever plan.
A beast they wrought, in semi-human figure,
Filled it with vice, and called the thing a Nigger.

-"On the Creaton of Niggers", by H. P. Lovecraft

If people want to look for good authors in the genre of weird fiction, they should look to William Hope Hodgson.

He had been a merchant sailor back in the last great days of sailing fleets. He got tired of the lifestyle and quit to become a writer. He wrote a pretty decent collection of stories with nautical themes, often a supernatural twist. Ghost pirates. Sargasso Seas. Flying Dutchman. Giant sea monsters, etc.

HPL was a big fan of his, and any time he wrote a story involving the ocean, whether it's Innsmouth or Cthulhu, he's clearly inspired by Hodgson.

Both Jaws and The Fog could have been classic Hodgson works if not written by other authors.

Out of the movies directly based on his stories I'd say either pic related or Re-animator did the best job. Neither of them are exceptionally good but both are entertaining and it feels like the creators had a lot of love towards the source material they were basing it on.

ITT: plebs who think tentacle monsters define Lovecraft.
>>
>>70934730
no. that's exactly why movies about HPL never really work. moviemakers/studios believe the real horror lies within the scary monsters, but that's not where it actually is
>>
>>70938093
Yup. Plebs think he wrote stories about tentacle monsters, they're really about existential dread and the insignificance of man.

This is why its never been done well, people think its about the looks/monsters. A generic hack n slash or jump scare film with tentacle monsters does not make it Lovecraftian.

Yea Alien kinda does both that's true.

>>70938696
Idk but I wish it'd go away.

The feeling of dread and hopelessness/powerlessness is what's essential to his stories.

This is why I think its fair to say True Detective season 1 is pretty lovecraftian, people go "but it wasn't really supernatural!" So what? Uncovering a vast and horrible conspiracy that the hero is powerless stop, even after they get scarface dude they even say there's more out there, is very lovecraftian.

Curiosity killed the cat is also big in his stories and was well reflected in TD also. Rust isn't like other people and why? Because he knows too much/thinks too much. Most people live in blissful ignorance, they don't really think about life but Rust does deeply and it makes him different. The way he can't abandon the case is also very much like how Lovecraft's heroes can't stop investigating whatever strange thing they've found even after being told to stop or hearing others dismiss it all as ridiculous. The idea that finding the truth about something can be terrible, but that its something you can't back away from once started, is very Lovecraftian.
