It's more like God is God and nothing you do has any influence on him, and all the misfortune that you suffer is nothing. You are what you are and you must accept what you go through.
The beginning of the movie with the couple and the 'ghost' try to tease you by portraying it as 'you can get your own way if you wish it so', but the end of the film throws it out of the window, after the Professor fixes the Korean's grade to make his life easier, he still gets shat on, first with the ominous phone call (most likely bringing more misfortune judging by his reaction) then the literal approaching storm.
Although it's very Jewish in it's theme and presentation, it's not made purely for Jewish people, it's a universal sort of feeling put through Jewish perspective.

The movie parallels the story of Job, event-for-event, but there is far less suffering involved. E.g. instead of losing his wife to a bunch of homocidal rapists, she just cucks him; instead of his hpuse being destroyed, he just moves out for a few weeks. If you read Job youll see what i mean.
Anyway, at the end of the movie when he takes money for a better grade, the only bad act he did in the whle film, it is then that the real story of Job begins (the protagonists son gets killed by a twister).

The movie is an indictment of Judaism
The main character is the typical neurotic beta Jew, bamboozled by events he refuses to confront, he instead rationalizes things. His son listens to Jefferson Airplane throughout Hebrew school: "when the truth is found, to be lies"
His Rabbis are totally useless at best, liars and manipulators at worst. His family claims to take Judaism seriously but they actually mock and deride it. He is possessed by paranoid fantasies of persecution by his Gentile neighbors even when they try to help him. In vital moments throughout the film, the name of Christ is envoked.
The Coen brothers have a long history of negative portrayal of Jewish characters. See: the Big Lebowski in which Walter is a ridiculous/pathetic Jewish convert, and Hail Caesar in which Jews are shown to be conspiring communists.
