it was always him there was no ai, he basically had godlike power and they killed his dream of fixing the world/helping humanity because they were scared of hivemind/control it would give him. In the end he transfers his consciousness and his wife's to some nano machines out in some remote garden then cut the link so the virus wouldnt kill them. They live out the rest of their existence in peaceful bliss together

This was a big part of it. The execution wasn't exactly stellar to begin with, but the script being just a wee bit too smart for mass consumption certainly didn't help.
