does anyone find themselves constantly retracting their own idea of when 'golden age' simpsons really took place? growing up watching the show, i had no hesitation in saying anything up to season 10-11 was brilliant. now, ten years later, i'm not so bothered by the more crude animation of the earlier seasons and they feel more genuinely written and less gimmicky. 1-4 is golden age simpsons to me, now. the time before writing became lazy and wrote itself

Mr Burns and his teddy bear
The one with Mindy
Bleeding Gums Murphy death episode

I agree with this more-or-less, but I don't think "gimmicky" is the right word. I think starting in season 5 the show became all about zany antics and the show lost its heart, the early seasons balanced humor and pathos far more successfully.
Of course most people don't give a shit about the characters and only want a good laugh. Personally, I think season 2 is the peak of the series.

I'd say Simpsons was at its peak from Seasons 3-6
Seasons 1-2 the show hadn't found its rhythm yet.
Seasons 7-8 are still good but you can see the decline in quality.

it's the highest rated episode on imdb, it doesn't get much more pleb than that

even if you don't think it's the best episode there are so many worse than it
Lisa the Vegetarian or the one where she helps Mr Burns become rich again.
