people only think that old horror is better because at the time they first watched it they were still young enough to actually be scared by movies. Don't blame filmmakers; blame puberty and desensitization

As someone who has only recently delved into horror, I call bullshit. Much of recent horror has been bad for similar reasons the action genre has fallen off so badly. It's not "muh nostalgia."

Nice meme movies.

It Follows and The Witch are actually alright though.

If you're looking for some solid recent horror flicks though OP, I recommend Last Shift, Clown, and Hush.

I'll answer because you got some nice digits there.

To me? The scariest thing about it is the guy that sold the love of his life off to Satan and a rape cult just so he could get out of commercials and into some movies.

>>70797342
most old horror was shit too. For every gem there were 100 duds. The thing is we only remember the gems
>>
>>70797239

No, I blame the ever increasing commercialization of Hollywood.

At least when it comes to mainstream horror films released in the cinema. Big releases are getting safer and more formulaic, and budgets are getting lower and lower.

The result it nothing but bland and soulless BOO scare movies that appeal to the lowest common denominator.

>>70797443

Clown is a ton of fun, a great black comedy approach to a body horror movie. I screened it at my annual Halloween Marathon/party and everyone ate it up, it was the most well received film of the bunch that night.

The Devil's Backbone is not quite a horror film, mate.

The first Evil Dead is very funny, and I'm not talking unintentional humor. It's just a little more subtle than the full on Three Stooges antics of the sequel.

Yeah, but what does it mean that they "apply it to the ED2"? Apply what?

ED2 is more self aware and polished, but ED1 is more inventive as a piece of filmmaking and more interesting in how it subverts the genre.

This whole good/bad ratio being constant through film history is an opinion held by a lot of young people, but it's bullshit. Films got worse.

here are some good ones from the 2000's, off the top of my head:

Mulholland Drive (2001)
The Devil's Backbone (2001)
The Others (2001)
The Host (2006)
Let the Right One In (2008)
The Orphanage (2007)
28 Days Later (2002)
The Ring (2002)

I dont think you can safely call anything a "gem" until it's been at least 20 years since release.

Mixture of passable and mediocre nothingness.

not even that dude, but nah son

it'd be a great movie to show kids to get them into horror, but that's the most that it can do

>>70804829
something tells me you're specifically pointing out antichrist and under the skin, because those two movies always hold the biggest points of contention in a million ways

in order for horror to be taken seriously as a genre, it has to co-opt subjects of adult fears, which makes it co-opt the thriller genre

i have had that debate far too many times
>>
>>70804815
I liked 2 more. Wan went all out with creative and dynamic camerawork in this one.

Doesn't stray far from the formula established in the first one, but the setting change from large countryhome to small suburban house was a stroke of genius.
If you enjoyed the first one I can assure you you'll enjoy 2, it's basically big mainstream horror done right.
>>
As above so below
Badadook is memey but a lot of fun
>>
>>70804956
>something tells me you're specifically pointing out antichrist and under the skin, because those two movies always hold the biggest points of contention in a million ways
And Funny Games.
>in order for horror to be taken seriously as a genre, it has to co-opt subjects of adult fears, which makes it co-opt the thriller genre
Not sure what you're arguing here. I'm not worried about horror being taken seriously. Films like Antichrist and Under the Skin don't tap into fears.
>>
>>70805171
on god, i swear that the acclaim behind as above so below, lake mungo and the descent is one big fucking meme everyone but me is in on. they're all really mediocre movies

i especially have a bone to pick with lake mungo, mainly because people like it for one scene. you know what other movie people did that for? the strangers. and the strangers was shit, except for that one scene. god, i hate lake mungo

>>70805178
antichrist deals with loss, isolation, emotional and physical abuse, and getting your nuts absolutely wrecked

even on the basest premise, under the skin dealt with aliens being relatively well-integrated into human society but still executing nefarious duties by human standards

sounds like fear-based shit to me
>>
>>70804621
Yet a shitload of people are talking about evil dead...
>>
>>70805428

I haven't seen As Above So Below, but I definitely agree with you on Lake Mungo and The Descent.

The Descent could have been a 10/10 but it was ruined by those stupid fucking cave monster. I guess I didn't get what was so "shocking" about Lake Mungo. It wasn't bad, but it's overrated.
>>
>>70805428
you seem a bit autistic, friend
>>
>>70805428
No, it's not a 'meme'. Each of them have qualities, but Lake Mungo is itself one of the best horrors- to put it in a single genre- of the last 25 years. Your autistic sensibilities seem unable to understand it, as with this guy >>70805595. And unfortunately, many other people fail to get out of the simplistic scary/shock mindset. It's extremely underrated and misunderstood.
>>
>>70805595
lake mungo, absentia and oculus tend to get recommended together like a trifecta of garbage

as above so below is basically the descent but a little cooler, despite wasting what could have been a great setting. it's okay for a watch, but i wouldn't expect for anyone to get their minds blown
>>
>>70804781
I like that movie quite a bit.
>>
>>70804621
You should be feeling pretty embarrassed right now, retard
>>
>>70805428
>antichrist deals with loss, isolation, emotional and physical abuse
A lot of movies deal with these things, including many of von Trier's other works, and they're not horror films.
>>70805428
>sounds like fear-based shit to me
But is it exploited for the basis of a horror story? I'd say no. These two films use disturbing imagery to explore intellectual themes. There're not aiming to scare or build suspense, or create a story grounded in traditional gothic horror. These are art films that are very consistent with the filmmakers' other work.
>>
>>70805772
Nobody ever recommend them as a trio. They have little similarities, but none of them is garbage
>>
>>70804881
I wouldn't say better, necessarily, but it certainly is a fucking standout classic, especially in terms of the holiday itself. Halloween and Halloween II together make for a motherfucker of the genre. but I don't necessarily watch those when the season is on...I watch Season of the Witch.

>someone doesn't like a movie
>better call them autistic

You need to calm down. You've provided no reason why it's "the best horror movie of the last 25 years". I didn't say it was a bad movie, I just didn't get the hype surrounding it. And I love slow burns, it's my favorite type of horror, but there was no pay off to Lake Mungo.

>>70805922

It's not contrarian. Halloween is a classic slasher, but 3 has more atmosphere and is way more fucked up. Carpenter still had a hand in writing and producing it. He also helped with the music, so it's still a part of his legacy even if he didn't direct it.
>>
>>70805922
the idea of changing the story to suit an anthology series was HIS idea, buddy. he didn't write the story, but you'd better believe he was around when they were making it. he didn't want the movies to be about Michael Myers, he wanted Michael Myers to be the focus of the first movie. he begrudgingly went along with part two, absent from the director's chair, and then only stayed on further for part three because they were trying to make it an anthology series. when it wasn't received well (even though it's fucking AWESOME), he left. learn your history, chief, and respect the bizarro brilliance of part three.
>>
>>70805948
Jesus hell, you're another retard. That isn't the point, and the use of 'of' there was correct. Two now should feel pretty embarrassed.
>>
>>70805764
there's nothing to misunderstand about lake mungo though. i don't know so much about the other guy, but i don't walk into horror films expecting to be spooked out of my seat. i do expect to be immersed in a story, though

the whole thing about her being there the whole time is haute tension levels of hokey for an ending

>>70805846
>disturbing imagery
>not aiming to scare or build suspense

trier's use of high fps in antichrist was specifically to put the viewer in a state of unease. last time /tv/ has a big horror thread, i had mentioned this, along with the ending of the vvitch

even within the depression series, trier hadn't executed the elements in antichrist the same way

>>70805868
i see the three recommended in a lot of horror circles, not because they are similar, but because they're horror movies within a time frame. it's the same reason you see zombie's horror films and the texas chainsaw massacre remake mentioned in the same breath

he didn't direct because he didn't want to direct. the only movie in the entire series that he did direct was the first one. by that measure, that would make all of them disqualified. SOTW is regarded highly now for a lot of reasons, almost all of which are completely subjective. objectively? let's start with special effects: hands down the best practical effects and gore, not to mention the disturbing nature of said violence (which is to say nothing of the plot, however much you may or may not like it).

"It follows", more like "it memes".

Terribly inconsistent lore and logic, not scary, wasted potential, and the worst possible use of "less is more"
>>
I like anthology stuff so I'd recommend:
Trick 'R Treat
V/H/S (just the first one though)
Creepshow was a fun campy anthology too. Not all that scary though.
>>
>>70807061
>only scenes i can think of that evoked the same feeling were a couple in melancholia
That's nice. Personally I don't think any of it works because it's gimmicky bullshit, but Trier is always trying to put his audience in a state of unease. Which lends to my argument that Antichrist is par for the course and not an exercise in genre filmmaking.
>>
>>70807143
i can see the logic not following, but what about the lore itself was inconsistent in this?

>>70807192
high fps in horror has definitely been misused -- i could call out the vvitch and the last exorcism on that, -- but i think antichrist's use of it loses the gimmick due to the antisexual connotations it evokes nine times out of ten. to make sexuality as visually and emotionally offputting as possible works for the story
>>
>>70803790
Evil Dead 1 is incredibly campy, how can you not laugh at the tree-rape scene? I only watched them somewhat recently but imo it's not that scary.

It may not be scary, but the characters, chemistry between them and the ending are pretty good.

I will agree that Lake Mungo is a meme. It's like the entire movie is buildup to one admittedly spoopy scene but that doesn't make the whole fucking thing worth it when it is around 90% nonsense. It's sad as fuck, I guess, which gives it strength in other areas but there is really only one part that is scary.

I will defend the other two though. I really like the Descent for a list of reasons. The buildup is bullshit and takes a long time, yes. But once shit hits the fan it goes out of control. The monster design is good, the scares are great, the claustrophobia is real. It even has what I would call a great female horror character. Watching that her go from scared woman trapped underground to coldblooded killing machine is incredibly satisfying.

In regards to As Above, So Below... I like it with a few certain conditions. For me, it felt like the movie was a mix of actually scary and so ridiculous and over the top that it was funny and goofy. So I guess I wouldn't say it was "great" but it was worth watching because I was highly entertained throughout.

With that said, here are my submissions to the thread, and I am aware that I'll probably get a lot of shit for these.

>The Poughkeepsie Tapes
Watched it really drunk one night, gave me pretty big spoops. Also The cameraman was the murderer
>Absentia
Not great but worth watching. Could have been fleshed out a little more but it has its moments.
>Dead Birds
Full of cliches but it's a fun ride with some good actors and has an atmosphere that you don't often get from horror
>Kill List
Incredible. The ending is fantastic and the whole film is best watched with zero foreknowledge of the plot. I watched this alone while on LSD, not recommended.
>Krampus
Fun seasonal film, legit spoops at certain parts. I found myself laughing more than one at the comedy as well.
>The Corridor
Slow, slow buildup but fucks you up at the end.
>>
>>70797239

Jacob's Ladder I think is close enough to a psychological horror, also one of the best movies I've seen. See it if you like the old Silent Hill games. Besides that The Decent, 28 Days Later, Feast, Cabin in the Woods, Devil's Rejects, Saw, From Dusk Till Dawn, and the Dawn of the Dead and Hills Have Eyes remakes are all pretty good. It Follows is supposed to be good to, but I've never seen it.
>>
>>70808602
Yep >>70806819 My second favorite werewolf movie. And I liked 2 too.
>>
>>70809281
It's not a meme. It's very much- as you to an extent noted- not a film that must be seen and judged as horror simply. So, it's nonsense to criticize it for not being scary. However, it's a money world, so I know the marketing, the posters etc. all promote it in a cheap way. But that's just the business of the thing, and shouldn't affect judgement.
Found footage mockumentary drama with horror tints would be a better definition.
>>
>>70810122
I guess I can agree with this. If it had been marketed more as just a mockumentary with horror tones, I think I would have enjoyed it much more. However, you probably know as well as i do that the people of 4chan has a penchant for exaggeration and so I went into the film with things like "Greatest horror movie of the last decade" and "scared me senseless" in mind and was left somewhat disappointed and that disappointment sort of congealed in my mind into disdain, I guess.
Sometime I'll give it another watch with all this in mind and maybe I'll enjoy more when I'm not expecting some mind blowing horror experience.
>>
>>70807333

The monster is described as fucking unstoppable and brutal, we are shown that he ripped that girl's leg and impaled her with it.

But the first time it catches the protagonist and lifts her by her hair, it just holds her in the air instead of making her explode or something. The monster's power level were completely inconsistent.

Also, what >>70807941 said. The whole origin of the thing makes no sense on the long run.

Perhaps that should teach directors to at least fucking explain where does the monster comes from or who summoned him
>>
>>70810252

>>
>>70810269
I don't see why you would expect it to 'teach directors' to explain something more thoroughly, considering the enormous success that It Follows itself found. It's not like it failed disastrously, and people are scratching their heads to learn what went wrong, or are seeking any lessons to avoid another terrible display. Very much the contrary.

>>
>>70810269
>ripped that girl's leg and impaled her with it.
Not that anon, but it is my impression that her hip was broken by intense demonic raep.

And re: the hair, if anything, its #1 main quality was patience, so it probably takes its time with its victims.

And often times when I hear things overly explained, they lose their magic for me. I don't need everything spelled out. That's one of my biggest criticisms of anime is that they HAVE TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING and in great detail. Ugh, it's tedious, but I digress. Anyway, I'm sure I'm in the minority these days.

Now, now. The shock and being the prime of 'how to scare' is a thing surely lost in 40 years, but its power to terror is now very much depending on how religious is the individual, then the satanic disturbance fins bigger resonance. But even if you're out of this circle, it's not laughable. It's one pretty good film from the period when WF was at the top of his game.
And the butchered Blatty film has one of the greatest horror scenes in the history of the medium, no doubt. But overall I found it mediocre and heavy, as heavy as the tired semblant of George C. Scott in every scene.

Also, I can understand being unpredictable, but this one was straight up inneffective. What? It was good. Again, not "essential", but easily the best horror film since 2010. Not that the pickings have been great.

Check out this tasteless equite

You wouldn't know patrician if it marched across your Rubicon
>>
>>70821786
what was it good at?
it wasn't scary, it wasn't funny, it wasn't captivating in any way
it didn't have a single intelligent line of dialogue, it didn't have any suspense, it wasn't shot particularly well, it had no redeeming qualities ON TOP of having a retarded premise
fuck this meme movie and everyone who defends it
it was just "meta" garbage for tasteless shitheads
>>
>>70792634
The Ringu and pretty much a lot of other japs stuff
>>
>>70821905
I mean, besides your lazy complaint about it not being "shot particularly well", the rest of your criticisms seem fairly based on personal preference rather than a problem with the way the film was made.

I think Goddard is a solid writer and definitely was a better choice to direct than letting Whedon do it. I think it had scary moments and fun moments as well.
Just for reference, can you name some "intelligent lines of dialogue" from some horror films you enjoy? Just so I know what you mean.
I think "no redeeming qualities" is particularly harsh to the point of pigheadedness. You'd honestly give it a 0/10?

Your opinions put you in the minority. Critics like it, audiences like it, peers like it and the box office liked it. It succeeded in every possible way a film can succeed.
>>
I'm thinking about watching 10 Cloverfield Ln. Any thoughts?
>>
>>70822079
>it had scary moments
what moment in this movie scared you?
>and fun moments as well
what moment did you laugh, or even chuckle at?
be extra specific because I watched it years ago and forgot almost everything about it 2 days later
>You'd honestly give it a 0/10?
actually I would, if it was just a film that I considered to be horrendous I'd still probably give it a 1/10 or 2/10, but in this particular case I am very critical of it because it's not fucking anything, not a horror film, not a comedy film, not an adventure film, not an art film, it's a big load of nothing, just a self-indulgent, unfun mess
>Just for reference, can you name some "intelligent lines of dialogue" from some horror films you enjoy?
I said that, exactly because it's not a horror film
because there was nothing scary about it and I wanted to drive home the point that there's nothing ANYTHING about it
I don't expect a horror film to be particularly smart, I expect horror to mostly have good atmosphere and to be consistent thematically enough to be immersive
if it's super smart that's just an added bonus, like a tale of two sisters
and since you found my criticism of "not shot particularly well" (where again I was just mentally grasping at straws trying to think of an area in which CitW might have excelled at), go watch a tale of two sisters, and then watch it again and notice how the director frames the little sister out when the enters the scene
now that's good filmmaking

so, again, I see you say "it succeeded in every possible way a film can succeed" and I won't even comment on how ridiculous a claim it is (makes me think you're not really interested in cinema at all), but I'm still waiting for someone to explain how it succeeds in any ONE thing
>>
>>70822299
then the father* enters the scene even
>>
>>70822299
different poster but i like how you ignored both his questions
>>
>>70822370
I answered both, what the hell are you talking about? He asked me to name an intelligent line of dialogue and I explained why I said that in the first place. He asked if I'd really score it a 0/10 and I replied to that too.

It's unsettling and is typical Polanski build-up, who is one level away from being a GOAT.
The ghost writer was also pretty good. It's one of those movies I could see 5 times a year, because it has something.

>Horror became shit when Carpenter exited the stage
This is exactly the kind of broad generalization that i'd make when I was a underdeveloped little shit, and that I look back on and become so embarrassed that I literally blush.

>when Carpenter exited the stage
Lol
>>

>what moment in this movie scared you?
When they first descend and pass the glass cubes of the other creatures, many of those were freaky as fuck.
>what moment did you laugh, or even chuckle at?
Off the top of my head (it's been a while for me too) I remember I laughed quite loudly at Bradley Whitford's character being killed my the mermaid after making several running comments throughout the film over how disappointed he was that he'd never seen them selected by the kids.

Look, it's certainly self-indulgent, but I found that fun. I'd like to draw attention to my first post, where I specifically said that making us choose films after 1990 was tying our hands. Also I haven't seen a Tale of Two Sisters, but I'll make a note of it.
What genre would you call CitW if not a horror? It seems pretty damn obviously a horror to me. Some people find consistency boring. I'd rather get a movie that does its own thing than follows a stale formula. For all your criticisms you surely cannot call CitW formulaic.

CitW did succeed in every measurable way. Obviously it differs from person to person, but when the majority of audiences like it, the majority of critics like it, AND it receives peer accolades, then it's very hard to call all of them wrong due to one person's tantrumatic "it's stupid" speech.

>>70822404
You actually did answer the 0/10 question so I'm not sure what that bloke is on about but you ducked my question about dialogue.

>CitW did succeed in every measurable way.
I wasn't paying enough attention to that part of your post, didn't realize when you talked about it succeeding in every way that you meant with all three of critics, audiences and financially.
>What genre would you call CitW if not a horror?
That's where my main gripe with it lies. It's not a horror movie. To me, the most basic quality of a horror movie needs to be immersion. Being scary doesn't make something a horror movie, that lynch flick with the guy appearing from behind the wall isn't horror just because it scared everyone who watched it shitless.
A horror film is meant to immerse you in a situation, typically (not necessarily) involving metaphysical, or at least psychological elements.
Now when you make a movie, and you brand it as horror, but drop any pretension of taking the content seriously from the very beginning, it's just not horrifying. I remember not even half way through I was just begging for it to end, because there was no attachment to anything happening on screen.
And it's not even that I am definitely opposed to anything meta, even in horror (although horror isn't the best place to go meta) but it has to be done tastefully and interwoven carefully into the viewing experience so that it doesn't obstruct the actual engagement with the movie. For example in the movie Resolution, it did go down that path but I didn't mind it nearly as much. I didn't particularly like it, but I wasn't outraged by it either.
I've never followed reality TV, and I can't speak for people that do, but I'd say it's probably the same as tuning to a reality TV show where the first thing they show you before each episode is a disclaimer stating that all drama and relationships that you're about to see are fabricated. You might as well watch a soap opera instead at that point.

That is, in varying degrees, appeal to popularity.
A null argument, and so far the only one you've provided.

It seemed like a humorous commentary on the genre within the frame of a horror film.

Like how, say, Galaxy Quest is a science-fiction film. Sure, it's a comedy, but it's also sci-fi.
>>
>>70823137
I didn't find Hot Rod funny, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a comedy.
>>
>>70823225
I didn't imply it's not a comedy, it's definitely more comedy than it's horror but mostly I don't give a shit.

What's the film in the OP?
>>
Post 90s horror movies feel like an unique genre. they stop caring about becoming classics, like the 70s stuff, and concentrate on the terror. i see where OP is coming from.

Insidious was absolutely my favorite series from most stuff mentioned here. it built its own world and explored in 3 movies. the first one is an absolute classic.

The first sinister is spooky as fuck, and doesn't rely on jumpscares too much. Haven't seen the 2nd one but I'm pretty sure it's not as good as the first one.

But for real, the first one is the scariest movie I've ever seen.

Was house of 1000 corpses really horror?

Honestly felt more like a sad and tragic movie?

Or am I thinking of 13 Ghosts?

I know one of those is in some weird house with weird fucked up looking ghosts but iirc they were more tragic and sad and not really hostile.
