It wasn't THAT bad
>>
>>70766627
Pacing was. Well, it was in a rush wasn't it? Oh Look,it's a seed,no wait, a bud, no wait, now it's a spro...nope, it's a small twig...no, it's a bit bigger, now it's shade?
>>
>>70766627
Yeah.. it was.
>>
>really bad human character acting
>horribly fast pacing

a director's cut might actually be a decent flick, apparently they had to cut like 45min from the runtime and there's probably MUCH better pacing in those 45 missing minutes.
wont fix the bad acting though

Too much talking. Director should have asked them to say things differently. Slower maybe. Movie was rushed.
It felt like some one edited every cut scene from a wow game.

No stupid dollar store fangs with Gamora, but Paula Patton >>> Zoe any day.
>>
>>70767640
it seems like early in development they were told they had a roughly 2.5 hour runtime, so they did that if a little longer

then some fuckass focus group said "no it has to be 2 hours!!111!!"

basically every movie ever made by a large studio had to be dumbed down for a larger audience and became worse as a result

they aren't wrong though, they're catering to general audiences which give them money

however i'm liking how rotten tomatoes is actually having a noticeable effect on ticket sales these days, people are more cautious movie goers and will wait for the RT Score. If this trend continues studios might actually have to make GOOD movies to get money

I'm amazed by the terrible acting of Khadgar, the absolute cheesiness of some deaths/emotion, the fight at the end that lasted 10 seconds with the good ol between the legs , and the just god awful acting of humans. The orcs did everything okay except mild cheesiness and downplaying the opinions of the orcs.

Fire Khadgar, bring in shamans, make it rated-R, get rid of Llane's fucking helmet, and stop being bad.

:/

2/10 movie, just awful
>>
>>70766627
I'd venture so far as to say it was fucking amazing.

Those tribal drums coming in at the opening were so fucking satisfying. I'll admit the pacing was pretty shit (the opening act was Exposition Central, and pretty much everything up to and including Lothar's kid's death felt kinda clunky and mishandled), but holy fuck when it finds it's footing near the end of the second act, I was fucking wide-eyed smiling. Durotan fighting Guldan, that final battle where humans are fighting orcs, it was all just such perfectly executed fantasy that I couldn't help but love it.

It did feel like it was sequelbaiting, especially with the opening and the ending with the floating baby (I've heard his name is Thrall or something?). The movie should have tried to focus more on the right then, I think, tell a self-contained story that could then be expanded upon.

Man, though...when shit worked it worked like a motherfucker. Kinda like how I felt about BvS, except I had no previous attachment to the source so I had less expectations. Plus, more stuff worked here.

Also, the action in the Orc Fights was fucking BRUTAL. Hard to believe a lot of that ended up being PG-13.
>>
>>70773836
>(I've heard his name is Thrall or something?)

Also, I read your points. Glad you share my opinions, despite never being a fan of Warcraft.

Did you know Thrall is one of the most well written characters in Warcraft? His entire arc is a godamn Jesus-esque pilgrimage throughout the world and his tribe.

So get excited for a sequel. If you loved the shit in this movie, you're gonna love the next ones.
>>
Other than Llane's actor, Draka's death, and the final Blackhand fight I thought it was good. The first encounter with the orcs in the woods and the Durotan vs. Gul'dan fights in particular were really good.
>>
>>70766627
/tv/ will hate it anyway, just because.
>>
so are Ner'zhul and Grom in this movie?
>>
>>70774077
Grom is in the background of a few scenes and Ner'zhul isn't in it at all.
>>
>>70773935
Well, I'm fuckin' hype. I really don't see how the critics were so off-base here.

I partially blame it on being a Video Game adaptation (doomed to fail). Also the Lothar/Garona romance made me want to rip someone's eyes out.
>>
>>70766627
>stormwind is burning in the poster
>never burns in the movie
>>
>>70774054
>Guldan taking off his cloak and revealing those crazy ass fucking bones
>Durotan breaking off one of the bones
>Guldan using that Fel magic and ripping out his fucking soul

I was hype literally the entire time and I didn't even care much about Warcraft before this.
>>
>>70774124
also, in the upcoming sequels, here are the arcs you're hopefully going to get

>a paladin's fall from grace, in an attempt to save the world he loses his soul.
>three races of old and new joining forces, putting aside differences to save the world from a demonic alien threat
>the orcs, led by thrall, travelling through distant lands in order to seek out a destiny. throughout their journey, they try to free themselves from bloodlust against humans and their morals conflicting with their tribal traditions

i seriously hope they dont fuck this up. i just wish.
>>
>>70774116
who was the skull-mask Orc from the trailer? I assumed it was Nerzhul
>>
>>70774326
Just a random Laughing Skull orc. There are dozens of random orcs you see with similar masks.
>>
>It wasn't THAT bad
Are we gonna rationalize like this for every shit movie?

Look, Warcraft geeks, I know you want to like this movie because it has Orcs. But don't settle for piss-poor pacing and melodrama just because it has Orcs in it.

This is not videokino and it's not the dawn of a new trend. Try cracking $100 million domestic then we'll talk.
>>
>>70774195
>Stormwind in exterior shots
>Never see Stormwind much outside the throne room, war room and dungeon
Nice world building, chumps.
>>
>>70773836
My thoughts exactly. It's not a Fury Road but it's not BvS either. Hyped as fuck for sequel, chinabros will save it.
>>
With a 32 at Metacritic, I can say I expected way worse. Movie felt too rushed and the acting wasn't very good, though.
>>
>>70774483
This along with the retcons are my biggest gripe s.

The first act and its exposition felt so goddamn rushed I was worried the gf wouldnt be able to follow along.

Luckily she isnt a moron so she was able to keep up. She was still shaky on Medivhs motivations though.

I wasnt about to explain Sargeras, Aegwynn and all that to her on the drive home so I just bought a copy of the Last Guardian instead.
>>
oldschool wow player here. dropped a while after cata. just now trying WoD

Its good eye candy, but the largest problem is that this is clearly made for fans. Pacing really is shitty. The score is half-assed too, which is really sad. I had expected more.

The closest thing i can compare this to is anime movies that are hodge podge versions of a tv series that normally is 20-30 episodes long. Theres too many assumptions made, shoe-horned relations and motivations, lack of supporting complimentary sub-story arcs...

I cant say that I wasnt smiling at certain parts. Initial Durotan/Draka dialogue was enjoyable. To be quite honest, I could have very much enjoyed the movie if the humans were a VERY small sub-element and this was entirely about the orcs.

I seriously doubt the directors cut with an additional..what..20? 30 minutes? is going to make up for this. If i were more critical, I'd say this felt like Warcraft the Fanfiction The Movie.
>>
>>70767082
Take your pills.
>>
How many fucking sequels until arthas? And did this shit flop?

Aren't thrall and arthas in the same era? But then I thought Lothar was like a legendary ancient king
>>
>>70776225

Lothar died in the Second War, well before Arthas and Thrall's time.
>>
I'm not a warcraft player, so I went in with low expectations. It wasn't good, but it wasn't any worse than any of the Marvel films lately.
>>
>>70768345
This. Also better than Jackson's Hobbit movies with their copy paste cgi. How the fuck did it get a lower score than those movies? Was it the stigma of being a videogame nerd movie?
>>
>>70776528
I wholeheartedly believe that it being based on a Video Game singlehandedly killed this movie.
>>
>>70776809
It doesn't help, especially with the track record of video game based movies and the public's perception of WoW and it's fanbase.
Jones kept the somewhat cartoonish look from Warcraft when designing the Alliance, to his credit. To everyone else who has never played WoW or Warcraft, which would be 99% of the RT critics, it probably looked out of place and cheesy.
I think that was the movie's greatest failure- people would see it without understanding the context of what they were watching.
>>
>>70777079
That's true.

I really only played a little WoW, took it like a week to download on my computer for some reason but it was pretty hype for the short time I did play it. I realized a little while ago that I fucking hate playing MMORPGs though. Have to devote too much time and effort, both of which I plum don't have.
>>
>>70777370
That is the biggest failure of MMOs, the grind. At least with WoW vanilla and TBC they used lore and a changing storyline to make it interesting.
>>
>>70766627
>>70767082

first 30 minutes has bad pacing but its an ok movie.

You know what, I'm just sad that this movie got bombed to hell in RT. Right now all fantasy movies - comic books, videogames or whatever high fantasy movie will always be compared to marvel quipshits for it to succeed. it has to :

a) light hearted
b) quippy
c) no heavy intellectual themes

or it will deemed not fun by the masses. BvS has its flaws but overall was a good movie, can't wait for Director's cut (i wish to see Snyder's 4 hour cut though) and Warcraft although has some serious pacing issues in the first 30 minutes is an overall enjoyable movie. but no, its deemed unfun and bad since it did not adhere to marvel's quipshit

fuck this shit. there's no variety in movies anymore today. if LoTR was shown today it would get destroyed in RT as well
>>
>>70777506

MORE WORK?
>>
>>70777455
I think Blizzard's got good ideas but doesn't know how to use them.

I mean, take Overmeme for example. A friend recently pointed out to me that the lore in that is fucking spectacular, but in-game you really don't get much beyond "colorful powered killers kill each other in battles of 6v6".

Not that there's anything wrong with that (hey TF2 survived off the exact same thing) but it feels like Overwatch has an insane amount of potential as a standalone story piece (as evidenced by the shorts.

If they'd just put a damn singleplayer/open-world mode in there...
>>
I wouldn't say it was good but it was pretty comfy to watch once. Saw it with a friend and we had a good time.
>>
>>70777751
I haven't played Overwatch so the story is lost on me, but if the game is a MOBA (is it?) then lore really isn't that important, at least not as important as it would be for an mmo.
>>
>>70778058

It's not a MOBA. It's 90% team based shooter with like 10% ASSFAGGOTS elements.
>>
>>70778058
I woulsn't go so far as to call it a MOBA in the traditional sense, it's literally just a TF2 clone with better characters that all have an "ultimate" ability. They have cooldown abilities too, but beyond that it's straight TF2.

The story is actually really deep for this kind of game though, despite it mostly being doled out through the shorts, comics, and other media.

Fascinating stuff there, prime potential for a kid's movie.
>>
>>70778096
>10% ASSFAGGOTS elements.
kek, why would lore matter in a team based FPS anyways? Gameplay is the main issue there.
>>
>>70778275

Ultimately it doesn't but a little fluff is nice. The characters in game will occasionally talk to each other so it helps understand the dialogue a little more.
>>
>>70778275
And the gameplay's fucking great in this.

I'm just saying, they have a great world they're completely wasting.
>>
>>70778226
I doubt a movie will happen after Warcraft's box office returns. Warcraft was easily Blizzards best IP, maybe Starcraft could be turned into a movie, or Diablo, but Blizzard probably is temporarily turned off after Warcraft's poor performance.
>>
>>70778352
Well, maybe they will turn it into an MMO after WoW finally crashes.
>>
>>70778407

That would be backwards. It started as an MMO, Project Titan. When it didn't pan out they took the concepts and assets and decided to make this.
>>
>>70774596
>It was confusing to normies so I bought this thing
Blizzard has won
>>
>>70778450
Huh, I remember hearing about Titan being Wow's successor, I didn't know that it became Overwatch. Neat, thanks anon.
If the fanbase grows enough they may go back and complete it. Wow wouldn't have been made without the foundation Warcraft 1-3 laid first.
>>70778494
Can't blame Blizz for catering to normies for shekels desu
>>
>>70766627
It is like the Speed Racer Movie to me. I think it is visually fantastic and great fun.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

Some parts are not perfect, but the imperfections are minor.
>>
I've never touched Warcraft in my life. The movie was easy to follow but was shallow as hell. The movie never explains anything about the world but expected you to care. It was like a watching a movie that relied on a deep understanding of the history of Liberia.

I'm almost glad that the plot of cliché fantasy, because otherwise i wouldn't have been able to follow it at all.
>>

Third War. Blood elves are what remains of the high elves after they were slaughtered and their city destroyed when Arthas came to town, so he could utilise the powers of the Sunwell to bring back Kel'thuzad as a proper lich. The Second War really was just an extension of the first one, where the orcs continued their invasion, but this time against the Alliance of Lordaeron instead of just the Kingdom of Stormwind.

I'd like to see Saoirse Ronan play Jaina. They'd need like some young blonde guy who's kinda bulky to play Arthas, but also at least can pull off sinister for when he turns into the Lich King, maybe something like Tom Felton if he bulked up. Sean Bean as Uther. Max von Sydow as King Terenas. Anne Hathaway (with my heart) as Sylvanas Windrunner. Tobey Maguire as Kel'thuzad. Charles Dance as Antonidas. Harry Lloyd as Kael'thas Sunstrider. Someone outwardly sinister as Mal'ganis, I was thinking like Jake Gyllenhaal but he's a bit too understated with his sinister, also doesn't have the right voice, maybe Ron Perlman. Ron Perlman as Archimonde if not Mal'ganis. Ron Perlman also for the other dreadlords.

Originally she was supposed to be half orc half human.

But then Blizzard retconned her into being half draenei instead of human.

But for whatever fucking reason didn't bother actually giving her any of the draeneis physical traits such as blue skin or horns.
>>
Some backgrounds didn't blend well with the with the actors and sometimes even the orcs looks like they were in front of a green screen.

The orc's development was alright but the humans were too rushed, like i don't really know about their world, their history, etc

Also the design of the armors was a bit cartoony and shiny, that plus the cgi backgrounds make it feel too artificial compared to the design of the orcs.

Lore aside the plot was over-complicated with references to a greater story for the next movies. The orcs were the best part and have the best characters, the humans characters were boring and i couldn't empathise with any of them.
I tried to like it. Maybe next one (if there is one) will be better.
>>
>>70766627

>>70785817

>>70784891
>we never do meet Lothar in game to find out his real personality
Eh, he's one of the few characters you hear from in warcraft 1 and 2.

The warcraft manual is told through Garonas and Lothars perspectives, they do recount historical events they weren't there for though.

the 4 hour cut of BvS isn't gonna be good lad. The three hour version will probably be the best version of the film. He said the 4 hour cut was just an assembly cut. >>Felt sorry for Durotan being soulsucked by Guldan
The character moments of Durotan were nice.
Shame they just occured in the constrictions of the movie.

I appreciated his frustration and confusion when adressing king Llane. Being used to war solving everything, yet knowing something has to be done differently.

im saying that his sons age in the movie is independent of the actors age

It is poorly paced, but despite that, it is fairly fun in a cheesy 80's and 90's fantasy fashion. I'm guessing the whole cheesines of it is among main reasons why people don't necessarily like it.

It wasn't Holy. It was regular Arcane - Alodi's message is just a hint at how the Spheres of Magic work (cause at this point no one knows all the workings of magic).

Arcane (What the Kirin Tor use) is the Opposite of Fel (Demons/Guldan).

Khadgar will likely undergo his aging process when he gets trapped in Outland with Turalyon in WC2.

Order (Arcane) <-> Disorder (Fel)

>It was basically his transition to be the next guardian, he had power to cure him.
>I don't know if anything in this movie is cannon.
Basically this.

As for it being canon (assuming a future where Blizzard goes on to make more and more movies) - just think of it like re-writing a draft of a book over and over and over again.

>Original WC story-line and lore
>Retcons with WC3, WoW and more
>Finally amalgamizing everything together when they make the film.

The movie canon is probably their final-image of how they want things to be.

It's also not really possible for it be Holy. Khadgar was not trained as a Priest. He uses Arcane.

Priests were mainly in Lordaeron - and then Paladins are born when its discovered that the Light/Holy energies can be used in combat (WC2)
>>
>>70787734
I believe it'd be because her actual parentage from the games is that her dear old orc dad, raped her mum (Maraad's sister), and that's how she was born. The film quite obviously depicts the orcs and draenei fighting, so to keep her half-orc lineage it would at least be implied that she was a rape baby. But because Medivh was the first human to interact with the orcs, this way they can remove the whole rape aspect and keep their PG-13 rating.
>>
>>70787879
Well he yells "from darkness LIGHT!" and thats when the golden light comes out of him, which looks and sounds exactly like the Light/Holy magic from the games.

Any references to Leeroy Jenkins?
>>
That's because it was good, it's like a 90% adaptation of Orcs and Humans. Everyone says the pace is off from jump cuts but I honestly didn't feel that was the case but that could be because I know the lore.but at the same time, lore wise every question I always see asked is answered in the movie besides like who was in the cube but that's because it was supposed to be a mystery and some things are left for the second movie.

I feel like the biggest problem non warcraft fans have is that they want more information about the new world they are experience and they feel more should of been in the movie but the truth is everything that was in the game was in the movie and a lot of the lore has come after or in addition to releases of the games. Basically it's like asking for the silmarillion after watching the first LotR movie and yeah it'd fill in all the blanks but the only reason you don't hear people asking for the silmarillion after watching the first LotR movie is that the LotR story is simple when it comes to the ring so people feel they have the whole picture whether they do or not.

I rate the film probably a 7 or 8 out of 10 from the 2 times I've watched it and the extra 40 minutes could easily push it up higher. I highly recommend you go to the theatre and watch it if you like fantasy in any shape or form and don't watch it in 2d or that chinese torrent because non 3D really hurts the special effects (first showing was 3d second was not).

>>
>>70766627
Oh boy it was.

Pacing was shit. It literally felt like someone tried sticking a couple TV shows' worth of material in a movie. It's hard to expect the audience to sympathize with characters and the world that they barely know shit about. I mean, we have practically ZERO information on what the setting is, how it works, which laws in there a easy or hard to break - that's why all the onscreen drama feels like it has zero impact.

The aesthetics were even worse. What Jones and the production team had to realize is that movie adaptations do not work like video games do, as they operate on a different level of suspension of disbelief from the audience. And that is the reason why the graphics plainly did not work, those plastic armor and overdesigned swords look like bullshit on screen, the whole fucking movie felt like it was made by cosplayers. Maybe if they looked at how Hobbit was made, it would have been acceptable.

Also, combat scenes. Oh fuck me with an umbrella, combat scenes were ABSOLUTE SHIT. I thought tBoFA was awful in portraying battles (orcs receive cavalry charges face front without lowering spears, Legolas marysues his way through hordes of enemies, Dwalin holds off about a thousand goblins, etc), but this missed a mark even as low as that. Why is alliance not able into formations, except for that testudo Lothar's son commands? Where are the gun lines? Why are they just charging orcs on foot? Do alliance commanders even know what tactics are?
>>

"The Orcs originated from another world Draenor, where the orcs, once a peaceful race, gone bloodthirsty from the blood of a pitlord. However, their Warlocks remained aloof, devoting their time to the research of magic. The Warlocks noticed a rift between the dimensions and, after many years, opened a small portal to another world. One Warlock explored and found a region, whose Human inhabitants called it "Azeroth", from which the Warlock returned with strange plants as evidence of his discovery.[21]

The Orcs enlarged the portal until they could transport seven warriors, who massacred a Human village. The raiding party brought back samples of good food and fine worksmanship, and a report that the Humans were defenseless. The Orcs' raiding parties grew larger and bolder, until they assaulted Azeroth's principal castle. However, the Humans had been training warriors of their own, especially the mounted, heavily armed Knights. These, assisted by Human Sorcerers, gradually forced the Orcs to retreat through the portal, which the Humans had not discovered.[21]

For the next fifteen years, one faction of Orcs demanded that the portal be closed. However a chief of exceptional cunning realized that the Humans, although out-numbered, had prevailed through the use of superior tactics, organization, and by magic. He united the clans, imposed discipline on their army and sought new magics from the Warlocks and Necromancers. Their combined forces were ready to overthrow the Humans.[21]"

>The % they get from ticket sales in China is actually very low
Wasn't the movie done by Legendary Pictures? I thought they were Chinese-owned. So wouldn't they get more?

I keep reading this but I don't get to see any source regarding box office rates.

Not him, but I think it's a bit muddled.
Legendary Pictures is based in the USA, but its parent company (The Wanda Group) is based in China, so it really depends on the kind of setup they have legally and commercially.

I'd say it's probably set up intelligently, where Wanda group smoothed the way, basically granting themselves everything Legendary needed to publish, but not knowing the full extent of what Wanda owns, it's difficult to say. Could be a lot of different chinese companies were involved in the publishing, which would still mean that that chunk of the profit goes to them, rather than Legendary/Wanda. (Plus anything that goes to Wanda, doesn't necessarily go to Legendary.)

Doesn't seem like a delusion at all. I expected some cool viral marketing myself. Like how they put a massive Gorehowl in a taxi cab in NY for the release of WoD. I was really amazed they didn't do something big and crazy like that for this movie. Feels like the studio really didn't want to give this a shot cause it wasn't the main genre they think people want.

I remember Tron Legacy going balls deep in marketing online. My brother and I got Encom badges from the stuff.
