The problem with Se7en is the movie does a good job making John Doe out as some sort of prophetic figure, a sort of demon playing among mankind or a holy figure that's seen just how hard society has fallen to rot.
The reality is John Doe was just a particularly intelligent serial killer. He was not some supernatural being, he was just a crazy who finally snapped and started killing society's waste in creative ways.
Hell, Morgan Freeman basically confirms this with the nonchalant way he treats John Doe, he's just something he sees every couple of years.

If you had actually bothered watching the movie you'd know the guy had spent YEARS deleting his identity and stacking thousands of dollars in cash for the sole purpose of being "untraceable".
