The percieved need to teach the common man his own written language, for his own understanding of the bible, was the motivating factor in the 15tyh to 16th century for universal literacy. Its why in 13th century England barely 10% could read and in 15th century Jamestown the literacy rate was above 90% including women.

Christianity has less do with stifling intellectual progress than other historical events. We owe a lot of our preserved knowledge to Islam, and later when they were raped by the Mongols a lot of that knowledge was preserved by Christian monks, as people have already said in this thread.

A bigger hindrance to intellectual human progress was probably the burning of the library in Alexandria.
