You need to understand the American philosophy of life. It's not about the actual substance of things, about longevity or anything like that. It's all about appearance and convenience. Americans don't really plan to inherit their houses to their children, they just want a big and wealthy looking house with all of the latest gimmicky bullshit inside. If it breaks during the next few years, they just move somewhere else, the credit card pays for everything.
To me, it's crazy, but that's just how it is. Even more or less rich people in the US buy and build cardboard houses. Sometimes they pay close to a million, you'd think that must be one massive house, but nope, they have ten televisions and all kinds of other shit in the house, but still cardboard. As long as it looks expensive and comfortable, it just doesn't matter just how pathetic the material is. It's hard to understand, but that's just how it is. I spent a year in the US and when I realized how that society works and what's driving people, I knew I would never return. America is wealthy, but they have no plans to turn that into something worthwhile. They just care too much about themselves exclusively.

Actually cardboard is stronger but not sturdy enough. Grab some cardboard the same thickness as the sheet rock. The sheet rock will break easily but the cardboard is durable enough it just collapses with your fist.
