LOTR General

This scene gave me goose bumps aragorn absolute bad man

Do you guys think the battle of amon hen was one of the more underrated battles in the trilogy
>>
>>70747151
It's the best sequence in any Tolkien movie ever made.

It's everything Hobbit failed at being, building tension while a small group of people survive the attack of a superior force.

Amon Hen and Moria were so good not even the huge battles in later movies could come close.
>>
>>70747151

One of the 3 goosebumps worthy moment of the trilogy, along with the lighting of the beacons by Merry and the charge of the Rohirrims.

Shit sorry lads thought the thread was pruned you lads think there should be a
silmarillion adaption but Jackson actually put time and effort into it unlike the hobbit

its definitely not underrated. one of the most memorable sequences of the entire trilogy. ill never forget the first time watching it.

Over the years I've come to hate Towers and Return, they're camp and cringeworthy in many ways.

Fellowship is absolute GOAT and I wish we would have two more LOTR movies in the vein of it, instead of love story grand strategy military simulator bullshit with big battles.

They're both good for different reasons. Tolkien is much moreso classic fantasy. You know what's going to happen from the start desu. You know Tolkien wasn't going to end the story with Frodo failing and darkness ruling middle earth. With ASOIAF, it's really a realistic possibility that everything ends horribly, even though most of us would rather it didn't.

err, I'd put 'massive armies' in mid or low, balrog in high, river horses in mid and dead marshes in high. was the watcher in the water really bad? >>
>>70754286
there is no point in even asking
And should there ever be anything like that we would drown in tears of joy
i hope i live long enough to see that something
>>
>>70754024
No, there is no chance it ends badly
Don't believe the gimmick that hard
GoT is fun because it's gritty in a fleshed-out, pretty nuanced world
LotR was a contemporary reworking of the old bardic-sung histories (like Beowulf and old Germanic hero stories/songs) that retained the grandeur and emotion of the source material, while adding magic and mystical shit. GoT is fun but it doesn't have the heart of LotR- the combination of Tolkein's WWI experience, his in-depth knowledge and love of the old history-songs, a cosmology that feels perfectly historical-GoT just has the imagination, with novelty and surprise thrown in

Kinda gay rant but I stand by all of it. GoT is good history-inspired fiction, LotR has the same weight as ancient histories, cosmologies, epic poems
>>
>>70754286
>>70754326
Nothing even comes close. LOTR is in its own league. Doubt we'll ever see it.

You should have played BFME2. Not only does it cover canon contemporaneous material not shown in the film, EA managed to secure an enormous amount of the film music. And programmed it all to respond dynamically to situations.

in regard to the second point, i don't understand this premise. Are you implying that because Tolkien wrote something, and other authors followed his example, that means what Tolkien wrote was bad?

the first point can be made for any work of fiction in history; why has an author not expanded on x?

regarding both points, GRRM's overall premise seems to be, "fantasy isn't real enough"

Tolkien adopted historical limitations and conventions in creating essentially another historical epic. It wasn't perfectly realistic, neither were the old epic poems that Tolkien drew heavily from, but accepting the same limitations was necessary to achieve the same sense of grandeur. Ancient stories of heroes were idealistic at the expense of realism, sure, but that was one of their strengths.

And for the second point, fatman missed Faramir's lamentations about the dead Easterling soldier (was in the second movie too), explicitly saying how terrible it was that some kid got plucked by his Lord for a cause he didn't give a shit about in a faraway land, and now Faramir has to kill those kids. It's no accident that Tolkien said he was most similar to Faramir out of all the LotR characters. It would've been nice if he'd made the orcs more sympathetic (like I think he planned to? I'm not sure on that one) but it fit the mystical-cosmic good/evil battle much better.

>I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless — while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors — like Denethor or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow — but it would have been just that. Not worth doing.

—J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter 256

Martin went so convoluted in his epic that he probably won't see to finish it properly, if at all, which actually would be a tragedy.

Malaz has some really quality moments. It has better battles, some plotlnes and autistic attention to worldbuilding. However it lacks in lore, it's pointlessly bloated, and doesn't have the mystic 'charm' to it.

But besides that, no, there are nothing to match it really. Tolkien was linguist and historia, I have his book 'The Legend of Sigurd and GudrĂșn', and it's absolutely stunning. This guy is scandinavian bard born millennium later than he should.

It's pretty clear that all GRRM can do is build up his characters to destroy them. Anyone whose read his work recognizes that he just recycles the same stuff over and over. In fact aSoIaF reeks of his obsession with dying earth sci-fi fantasy, from his earlier writing career.

GRRM can bitch all he wants about cliche evil overlords and their black legions, but all he did was make them blue ice zombies.
