After Joffreys/Myrcelles death he realized that Lanisters have far too much enemies to be relaiable political allies. Giant debt with the Iron Bank that they don't even care about has only grounded him in his beliefs.
He sold King's Landing to pay off crown debts, now he'll start rising tension between royal family and common folk/high sparrow. Bravois arrive to pile of rubble ruined by riots, and since Tommen sent army away to the riverun he's the man with the biggest arny on the south.
In season 7 he raids Riverun siege, makes peace with Blackfish, Ramsay/Salsa or whoever is leading north and thus secures his position as a king.
Later he dies killed by Danerys who finally arived to Westeros and demands to be crowned a queen. Peace and prosperity that he brought to Westeros ends and another war starts.

On the shitty tv show, he has no plan. Despite being arguably the richest and most powerful lord in Westeros, he’s just a dufus puppet clown who meekly kisses Tywin's ass and obeys Cersei for no reason at all.
In the books, Mace Tyrell is supremely arrogant and while this may blind him to the political realities around him, he knows the strength of his house and has a definite plan to take over the Iron Throne via Margaery’s marriages, first to Renly, then to Joffrey and then Tommen.
And I’m guessing that he’ll try to marry Margaery off a fourth time to Aegon the Reconqueror.
